I've yet to meet a smoker I don't feel superior to because it is such a visible sign of failure as a person

You should write a self-help book for all the people who are inferior to you. Don't just stop at smoking though. That would be a travesty. You seem to just have so much to give, that we could all benefit from.

What happened to your attempts to stop? I remember reading your posts about your attempts to stop over the years. Conscious decision to go back or did it just beat you?

I'm just weak and pathetic. A snivelling, grovelling excuse of a man. Not fit to be in the same beer garden as men of stature such as yourself

Are you avoiding the question? What happened to your attempt to stop? You obviously thought you wanted to at some point.

I know you are saying this as a backhanded insult but in this regard at least, you know what, you are probably not far off the mark. As I said above I've given up with being cajoling and diplomatic and just say it as I see it. Sorry if it is offensive.

edit - just to add. I'm not bothered about a bit of smoke in a beer garden. Weirdly I quite like the smell - reminds me of my childhood ๐Ÿ˜‰

Binners is getting to the point of it, it's an excuse for middle-class whiny cockbags to act superior. You know the sort of ponces, graphic designers who say they love Greggs (in an ironic way of course), like 6 Music and spend their time doing sickeningly twee things like designing t-shirts for their gang of cycling mates. They should leave pubs for good old salt of the earth types who'd deck you if you asked them not to blow cancer in your face and then try and drown you in Carlsberg.

Am I? Oh.....

I just like to make everyone feel a bit better about themselves. A bit... you know... superior. Its public service really. As I've said countless times already... a bit of gratitude wouldn't go amiss

I work in a pub.
Apart from smokers not causing anyone any bother (believe me, I'd know about it straight away...) I'm just glad that 99.999% of my customers are not the arseholes being either described or demonstrated on this forum.

And that even includes the great many cyclists that frequent my beautiful boozer.

I'd say superiority is as big a character floor as smoking to be honest. You are not better than a smoker, you are just a person who doesn't smoke.

But not because you're weak binners. It's because we don't like your smoke and we like to sit outside too. I suggest a windsock in beer gardens which would allow smokers to show how polite and sensitive they are by choosing the downwind end.

We don't need a windsock. We have our own ingenious method of telling which direction the wind is going. We blow smoke into it. We then go downwind of people.

As stated ad bloody nauseum, your problem isn't smokers, your problem is inconsiderate people who happen to smoke.

Right, even I'm bored with the cyclical nature of this discussion now.

I'm going to reflect on my many and varied inadequacies, and maybe have a little cry

Well I'm clearly not going to agree ๐Ÿ™‚

As a sentient adult the choice to continue smoking despite the evidence and without regard to your family long term, or the inability to give up once addicted are not positive character traits - end of. Just can't be disputed. I don't have those character traits ergo in that regard (only that regard) I am superior. When I see a smoker I don't immediately fear for my personal health through secondary smoking or any of that bobbins - I just feel sorry for them.

Sorry, I've yet to meet a smoker I don't feel superior to because it is such a visible sign of failure as a person and I suspect most non smokers feel the same.

I'd suggest the simple fact that you claim to be superior to someone else in any regard marks you down as having a less than perfect character. You should maybe have a closer look at yourself.

Oh, and I'm a non smoker and do not feel the same.

Taking that to it's logical conclusion, you don't feel even just a tiny bit superior to a pedophile, a murderer, someone who enjoys a bit of animal cruelty or a good old fashion fly tipper? If not superior (maybe the word has a nasty ring to it) how would you describe yourself in comparison to them - please don't just say 'different' or any other PC bullshit. I feel you maybe have self esteem issues ๐Ÿ˜‰

You're right. And as a smoker, these people are your problem too. Because as long as there's inconsiderate smokers, there's going to be harsh rules that disadvantage you. Just don't blame the nonsmokers.

I don't think I'm superior but I do think those you mention are c***s.

Well unless you also perceive yourself as a see you next tuesday I suspect a philosopher would have a field day with your concept of superiority. It's a word with modern day connotation I appreciate but it's meaning is relatively simple!

As you know and I know how the word is used and what tends to be meant when it is used, answers like that simply confirm the type of person you are. I expect those around you are not quite as keen as you think they are to hear your opinion.

Just messing with NW's post... (not an annoying FTFY)

You're right. And as a [s]smoker[/s] dog-owner, these people are your problem too. Because as long as there's inconsiderate [s]smokers[/s] dog-owners, there's going to be harsh rules that disadvantage you. Just don't blame the non-[s]smokers[/s] dog-owners.

Bit clunky, but binners' attitude on dog threads is very similar to those with whom he has a problem with on this thread. One would almost think he didn't really mean this stuff. ๐Ÿ™‚

Believe it or not I'm a pretty mild mannered person with a live and let live attitude to most things and pretty self-deprecating. If you read back, smoking and I have a history; hence the change in attitude and therefore language towards smokers. It's something I'm quite happy to be opinionated about. If you want to be a smoker apologist (my previous position) crack on.

Not read all 25 odd pages but...

If you are spending long enough in beer gardens that you are worried by the affects of passive smoking on your health, then I'd suggest you also need to to be thinking long and hard about how much time you spend drinking...

My kids don't drink.

so I assume they don't spend much time in beer gardens then...in which case its not really going to be an issue for their health is it.

Ignoring the 'health impact', as for the general argument of 'its smelly and pollutes the air around me..', i can understand that a little more, but then again you could make the same argument for anyone who drives a car..don't hear much of an outcry on here to ban them...

That depends if we're having a meal or not.

Drac...I'm pretty sure that your kids having the odd meal out in a beer garden surrounded by smokers won't have any affects on their health...

I'm not arguing it doesn't smell etc etc, but the affects of irregular passive smoking whilst outside are fairly remote i'd expect.

fyi...i'm a non smoker

Perversely (given my anti smoking ranting) I agree. I see the health threat of passive smoking in the outdoors as a red herring. You could have an issue with the antisocial smell aspect but again that doesn't really bother me either. Annoys the hell out of my wife but she was brought up in a non smoking household so maybe that's why she notices it so much.

Passive smoking is very harmful to kids, if you can smell it then you're breathing it in.

but sitting next to someone smoking outside once in a while is a million miles away from growing up in a house full of smoke, travelling everyday in a car full of smoke, or working 9 hours a day in a smoke filled environment.

I think you'd need to spend a long time in a beer garden for it to have any tangible affect on ones health

I'd suggest that comment is trying to divert away from the issue and conflating an activity that can harm the individual with one that harms the individual AND anyone else unfortunate enough to be nearby.

Plenty of people go out to pubs to socialise or with their family, it's not *just* about alcohol consumption.

Similarly you can easily go out and get hammered in no time, or spend an entire afternoon with your pals and only have a couple of alcoholic drinks (or none at all, shock!).

Bloody hell I can't believe I've missed 9 whole pages of holier than thou-ness and patronising condescension. Smoking fags and drinking beer (especially together) are one of life's unalterable pleasures. That's why people have done it for thousands of years.

And, as I stated on one of the previous uses of this: The root of the problem isn't that they're inconsiderate, it's that they're smoking. Were they not smoking, they could be inconsiderate anywhere they liked.

Being pedantic it could yes...but in reality, how may hours over the past 12 months have you and your family spend sitting in beer gardens..enough for passive smoking to be a health concern. honestly?

To be honest I'm far more irritated by kids in beer gardens than I am smokers...;-)

A few but not as many as I'd like as the beer gardens not as many as I would like to because the smokers spoil the dinning experience. So we sit inside to avoid them, now there's a chance we don't have to.

I do that too but often sitting outside isn't an option because the smokers make it unpleasant and passive smoking is harmful.
