[Closed] Smoking is a pretty disgusting habit, but...

I think a chain of pubs for smokers only will do well.

I think the smoking ban could present something of a problem.

For that reason, I'm out.

If you want to smoke fine, just show some consideration for others and get a space away from others. Kids around, eating areas, huddled around pub restaurant\pub doorways for me is inconsiderate.

Unfortunately some need laws\rules to try and make that happen.

The hospital here is just amazing, all the time there are smokers all around the entrances half covered semi enclosed areas rain or shine, patients and visitors despite endless signs and smoking areas within 10-30meters.

I was coming back to the hospital after a welcome few hours day release at home and this woman smoking right by the back door where I had no choice to walk straight past here, she commented to another smoker that it was alright to smoke there as she point out the disgusting pile of butts all around on the floor. So I said no its not
actually is it. I pointed out the dozen or so no smoking signs plus gas store no flame signs and the smoking shelter 20meters away and reminded her this was a hospital with sick people coming and going not wanting to breath that in. She apparently hadn't seen any if the signs, shelter and just carried on and called me a few names as I shuffled of with baldy head and mask on.
She and plenty of others are just willful ignorant people who just simply wouldn't think.
No not all smokers are like that I know. I only have one friend who does and shes as considerate as they come with it.
Considering smoking rated are coming down, smoking litter is still pretty rife in places which bugs me too.
Don't get me started on the 6month ish looking pregnant woman smoking by the same hospital door just last week.

Rant over

I know I'm in the minority apart from one poster above but I like the smell of smoke fron fags. Reminds me of my childhood.

My Dad never smoked in the car but his friend who was a very heavy smoker did and on school runs it stunk, I remember that so hate it. My Dad has serious heart problems brought on by smoking and his friend, well he died before he was 60. He enjoyed life's pleasure of smoking and drinking but not for very long.

Thats not true, is it?
You've actually asked someone to stop smoking, and you've been met with a deluge of abuse? On a number of occasions? Really?

I've also been asked, outside a café "as you're not smoking, can I have your table, outside is for smokers really, non smokers should be inside"

Sat outside a lovely cafe in the sunshine a couple of weeks ago, i paper in hands, espresso on the table. Along come a couple who sit down and both crack up a fag.

Why cant I enjoy the fresh morning air?

I think the next time this happens I'll borrow one of Binners Canadian rock CDs (Bryan Adams, Nickleback) and pop it on a portable DVD player to blast it out on whilst nodding slowly at them...

😀

just back from california.

Ate out and went to pubs alot came across this issue precisely zero times.

who would have thought americans with better manners than the brits.

Smoking is illegal in California in any enclosed public or commercial space. When the law was first proposed, pub owners were sure their businesses would suffer. It didn't happen, people will still drink. Now they step outside to smoke, or in some cases, there is a designated outside area attached to the pub.

When I was a child, the majority of adults smoked tobacco. Now I can't think of a single adult in my immediate circle who smokes tobacco. Of course, being a cyclist, my friends are not in a smoking demographic, but nowadays in California only a small minority uses tobacco.

As they do here in the UK. But the thread is about smokers making it unpleasant for non-smokers to inhabit the outside areas.

repack rider - i was talking about the outside areas.

25ft from the door was the rule that seemed to be printed by all the doors and religeously enforced in cali

Worked well it seems. I liked the place.

Well done binners and claudie 🙂

It's almost 6 and a half years for me now.

I still think about them every so often, but there is no desire to smoke them and the thoughts soon pass.

Good to hear the success stories, I am just 19 hours clear from the e-cig. Not that I'm counting.
I might have to read through this thread to see how you did it.

Just catching up to say 'well done' chaps. Easier than you thought, in the end?

Roper, I recommend the book 'easyway to stop smoking'. It's a bit 'American' in the writing, but if you want to stop, I'd just recommend letting it do its thing. Worked for me and a few people I know.
