Been running the machine today & when it's used there is a horrible musty smell around, and when the door is open.

Wht is the problem & how to solve it?

Liquid detergent?
Running at low temperatures?

I'm afraid that this is a very common problem. Try switching to powders or tablets instead and run a hot wash through the machine occasionally. This completely fixed it for us.

You need to do a 60deg wash, with your normal detergent is fine, best if empty. Also look in the folds of the rubber seal around the door, its probably all black and horrible, shift the worst of this with a pan scourer. Jobsagoodun

I bet if you clean out the drain pipe it'll be full of vile grey sludge. Washing machines aren't really designed to function at 30 degrees, they don't clear themseleves out proper. Hot wash needed, think you can get some special cleaning tablets things as well.

Run an empty 90° wash with a capful of bleach in the drum.
Then a second rinse wash.

Don't use so much fabric conditioner in future 🙂

90 degree wash. other good thing to try is white vinegar - it will need a good rinse after but will also help shift scale.

the lower temperatures, combined with the nice nutrients in the detergents will help a nice biuld up of fungal growth somewhere in there. Strip out the powder tray etc too - that can be a cause.

Do you use that terrible Ecover sh*te by any chance. Im all for the environment but my housemate uses that rubbish and a) it doesnt shift stains and b) it seems to promote black mould type growth around the seals and a musty odour.

It could be the drain pipe the washing machine is connected to - if that gets blocked its a problem as you get backflush at times into the machine. I have to take the one here apart once a year or so (yuk!) as it is a very shallow incline so stuff tends to stick in it.

Washing soda at 90 is good to clean machines. The last engineer to fix the one here said you need to run a long 90 wash at least once a month to clean the machine.

Could also be your pump not fully functioning, if its not pumping out properly, it will be swishing some of the dirty water around with the clean water rinse etc.

I found that problem with the ecover stuff. Nice and planet saving but it wouldn't get my shirts clean and left them fusty smelling. Now just use it for wool and expensive cycling kit.

Not tried the Ecover wash stuff, but I can report that the Ecover fabric conditioner is good and smells nice. 😉

Super hot wash with detergent followed by 40C wash with white vinegar.

Clean pump out.

Make sure it is spinning to clear the water otherwise it could be carrying a bit of water after a wash cycle and bacteria/mould grow and cause the stink.
