Hi all,

Parents love all things slate, so thinking of getting them some slate placemats for them - they will be used on a wooden dinner table with a toughened glass top.

Something like these;

I've read people saying the slate chips or cracks easily - does anyone have any experience with this? Anything I can do to stop/prevent this (coat of varnish or something?)

Cheers,
Duane.

Placemats yes, slate serving plates, no.

The ones in your pic are a tenner for 4. If they break, they can be replaced. Or buy better ones to start off with. You don't see people varnishing their roofs.....

Yep - we use them. No cracks or chips. Don't varnish them. Part of the beauty is the natural finish.

No - looks awful, like off-cuts of roofing slate.

The problem with this stuff is covered with those links above. Aldi and dunelm mill could be bettered with a trip to the builders merchants and the honister stuff is lovely, but very pricey.

Given that the table top is glass, then how about a contrasting/softer material for the placemats? (not sure what, but there will be something)

If you must, go to builders merchant get new slates and oil or varnish them.

much cheaper and that home made warm fuzzy feeling

I have two pallets of Victorian roofing slates I've just removed from our flat. £5 per slate? 😛
