Hi all,

Not got a snow-lid, and heading out to the Alps after New Years.

I was planning on getting a snow-specific lid, until I found out that you can get ear pads for the TSG Evolution skate lid which I already have. The helmet then looks like this;

It still won't be a "true" ski lid though will it..

- No padding on chin strap - will this be much of an issue?
- No mesh under the air vents to keep snow out- can try bodge something, or just leave it?
- No way to close off vents - hopefully be OK helmet is too well-fitting to wear a beanie under
- Helmet won't be as warm - do ski helmets use a denser foam to keep the heat in..?
- No goggle strap. I'm thinking of replicating these; http://www.gogglegrip.com/snow/ with a few of these, which might actually be better than the standard rear goggle clip?;

Any thoughts? I know the easy option is to just get a ski helmet, but trying to save the pennies here!

Ta, Duane.

Never done it but is always seemed viable to me - although they usually have insulation and I wouldn't try it without a skull cap or similar.

That'll do. Maybe wear a buff under if it's a bit cool. You'll be right.

Edit. Been following your posts, like the way you're approaching this trip 🙂

TKMaxx have Dinase. Protec and Poc helmets for around £15/£20. I bet they would work out as cheap as the ear flaps and the goggle grips.

when skiing I use a Kayaking helmet (top photo) - I have never had any issues with goggles falling off, no ear pads (I use a thin buff) or the lack of chin strap padding (I did add some on though - but that was for kayaking) - I will admit Sweet also make ski helmets that look very similar just with different padding/fitments (lower photo)

I've snowboarded in various skate helmets without any issues. TSG evo was great(left it on a bus), I'm consider an Evo superlight for this season. At the minute I'm using a POC that I managed to pick up cheap, I don't rate it as much.

As above - I do wear a buff underneath when it's really cold , but a lot of the time I appreciate the extra ventilation.

It can be quite tricky to get a good fit with goggles - but then again most Goggles need ventilation at the top. I'd rather have a gap then steam up all the time.

OK, cheers all. Think I'll go with modding the TSG. I had a look in the local TKMaxx a while ago and there was nothing there that fit. Just ordered a fake Buff for when it's real cold.
