Anyone know anything about them ?
I would like to get one to play on the surf on my local beach - but know absolutely nothing about them - any pointers?

Do you mean a surf ski? But more manoeuvrable than a kayak I think - some people rip on them.

Think they are quite niche these days, tried one years ago and it was fun
I think the surf ski is little too GNAR for what my intended purpose is. I wanted something that is manoeuvrable to play in the surf.
Ferrals has nailed it. Quite fun in small waves. Good in proper waves if you have the skills.
Standard sit on tops are for flat water only. Please, for everyone else's benefit if nothing else do not surf a standard sit on top.
If you are planning to surf a waveski please go somewhere quiet if you don't know what you are doing.....

Mega make sit-on versions of their surf boats. They aren’t cheap.
do you really mean a surf kayak? They are quite a specialist tool and not easy to master.
Are you an experienced kayaker? If not 25kg of Tupperware in the surf zone is a recipe for seriously injuring anyone in your path.
^ no - but an experienced water user - sailing / windsurfing etc - and also in a work capacity. Well aware of the carnage that could be caused if you don't stick to non bathing areas, stuff free of rips etc etc etc.
I wasn't suggesting launch into the waves of Nazaire, or into crossshore sets at Jaws.

A friend of a friend has one. He's pretty handy with a kayak and seems to have fun in small (<1m) surf on very quiet (cold Scottish!) beaches.
As a not very good paddler I can say with confidence (and experience) that surf is not the place to learn the art!

Noted. But just for info, if anyone's looking to buy one, a surf ski (as linked by ferrals) for surfing beach breaks is a different thing altogether to a surfski, a long narrow sit on top kayak designed for surfing ocean swell.
i`d love something like this for the mushy waves off of brighton
that said i went out on the paddleboard in teh mush and had a laugh (kneeling as i`m not pro) sat with a kayak paddle it would have been more fun i think.
i don't miss SE waves, mushy low tide rollers that there never seems to be an end to, or vicious shore dumps that pound you into the shingle, throw a load of stones at you and then drag you back out for another go...
