Just got my first SLR and had some fun playing around with long exposures last night with some sparklers, loved the effects it gave and I want see more photo's now to see how cleverly it can be used to get some really amazing images (definitely not so I can copy the ideas and pass them off as my own ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Here's my basic efforts from last night anyway...

Cool photos guys. Love the long exposure stuff, especially when it's a night shot that's so long as to look almost like day. Bloody cold doing it though.

Used to have load more on my flickr account but had a clear out last time I got past the 200 images free limit. Mist sort out a pro account.

Anyway, couple of "short" long exposure daytime shots

Sturdy tripod. Focus to infinity, Start at F8 or so and experiment with timing. Depends on available light for night photography. Most of mine are taken no more than 3 days either side of full moon.

For shots with an exposure time of up to 30 seconds you can use the timer. For over 30 seconds, you'll need to set the camera to manual, shutter speed to "bulb" & use a remote control (and stopwatch). Also switch on the long exposure noise reduction or your shots will come out really grainy.

Although my 30D does not support in-camera noise removal, I'd not use the function if it did. It takes the same amount of time as the exposure to run so for a 8 minute exposure, it takes 16 minutes to take a single photo. Do it at home in Noise Ninja or Photoshop etc.

Point and shoot (in manual mode) IXUS 40 and no tripod, so I'm rather pleased with these. Both on Kangaroo Island in Australia

Really really great photo's, I want to know how you do this.

I have two cameras -

(1) SLR with good lens but have to use "Film"

or

(2) Push and point Conan Digital IXUS 75.

So the question is how do I take good quailty pics.

O and if you know how to do it can you explain to me in "Simple Simon" language and NOT jargon.

Cheers

Mine are taken on a compact so I'm limited to max 15 seconds, I have a mini tripod and use the 2 second timer function so avoid any wobble from pressing the button.

1 Second exposure (not particularly long but the water was moving pretty quick).

5 Seconds on this one.

Same amazing pictures on this thread - most way better than my humble offerings.
