inspired by the bivvi kit thread really - thinking about the coming seasons family adventures which given the imminent addition of baby2 will probably mean a bigger tent and the bigger dog cage in the car will mean a luggage trailer or roof box will be a consideration too.
so what's your favourite bit of camping kit?

Honda FRV with a Vango Tigris 400DLX tent. Its massive for a 4 man tent, so can easily accom a kitchen area, + table+chairs, + storage. Very pleased with it, although not too sure on waterproofness

After getting ruddy soaked on every trip this year - the best bit will be the 4 star B&B round the corner from the campsite next year!!!

Has to be the cobb bbq. ready to cook in a couple of minutes when using the coconut derived fuel although can also use charcoal, and it stays cool so you can cook on grass or even a picnic bench without having to hunt for bricks. Can even pick it up and move it halfway through cooking a whole chicken!

after seeing a friends bell tent - towards the end of last summer we took the plunge and brought a 5 meter bell tent - its H U G E - 5 meter diameter, 3 meters tall, can sleep loads, but we use it for 2 adults and 1 child, erects in 20 mins, takes longer to pack properly, MUST be stored dry so you need a drying spot at home if its wet when you pack it. Its awesome, sides roll up, lots of space. We've now moved into the glamping zone! All (just) packed into a 307SW last year, now have a smaller estate so gonna buy a roof box soon.

looks like this (not ours):

[img] [/img]

from: http://www.belltent.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1 (hide your credit card!!!)

We also brought a little Webber bbq for breakfasts, lunch and dinner (all merge into one once your on the campsite), we take blankets and rugs, stove, coffee maker etc, glamping and fair weather camping is where its at for 2011 !!!!!

😀

PS: i'd be interested in what airbeds people use and recommend.

Mate of mine's got a bell tent just like that. It's ace, but weighs an absolute ton - took two of us to carry it across the campsite.

Airbeds - Alpkit's mattresses are ace and a fraction of the price of Thermarests.

Hoping I can finish this in time for the summer or holiday plans may have to change. Family of 4 and have been buying bigger tents as children came along then bought a trailer tent and we were like a small village. We decided we wanted to travel around more rather than stay in the same place all holday so hopefully this is going to be the answer.

Don't have pics but my set up is a new shape galaxy with a dog guard so we can fill the back to the roof. Thule rack on a detachable tow ball. Then a variety of decathlon pop up tents it worked brilliantly for the two trips we did last year but a have yet to use them in really bad weather. Not had to resort to the roof box yet but if I do it will give my an extra 600 litres. Any one used a one the big pop ups in bad weather ?

ive been looking at the various bigger Sprayway tents that look like good value and offer the sort of space and flexibility we are after (wee ones will be in with us for the next couple of seasons so the big dome with little sleeping pods off isn't ideal) but qwerty's bell tent is making me reconsider as they do indeed look very special indeed.

if i had unlimited funds i'd LOVE a T5 conversion but everytime i have the daydream and look into putting something together i end up mentally spending £30k and realising i could have a nice yacht for that sort of money! Sturmey - have you got a build thread on here?

We got fed up with big tents and lately ended up using a 3 man backpacking tent (Marmot Aero 3P) and a really big tarp with two poles. Far less hassle to pack up and cart about, but not so good in really foul weather.

[img] [/img]
[img] [/img]

EDIT: images not to scale 🙂 That tarp is 3m x 3m but there is a bigger one still.

Needed a trailer to lug it all around in though, & took ages 2hrs+, to pack it all away.

Trouble is, we've been spoiled by this for the last two years. 🙂

I have more that one tent

The first is for our Summer 2 weeks away and is a Vango Diablo 600

[IMG] [/IMG]

and I can get it all packed in the car with a Halfords 360L roofbox. It is a bit tigt but does fit. I was going to go down the road of getting a trailer but that would only encourage more stuff to be taken.

There are 3 of us.

We also have a bodyboard and skimboard, fishing rods in there as well as cooker, fridge, kitchen storage unit that the cokker goes on, chairs and all the other stuff you need for a fornight

[IMG] [/IMG]

We also have a Vango Orchy 500 for weekends away

[IMG] [/IMG]

and if I am away to an event witht the bike I have a Vango Gamma 450.

I wonder that no one ha yet designed a camper pod, which collapses a bit for storage, but can easily be fitted and removed from the back of a transit, for example, when required.

something like this?

Seen them on a few cars and smaller transits at campsites.

No pics, but bagged an Outwell Nevada M tent, carpet, footprint and extension for £150 during the Go Outdoors Boxing Day sale. The fact that it's my first bargain for years, makes it my favourite piece of kit.

No, I was thinking more of something a bit like a portable room/pod, which you slide into the back of and empty transit. So you can use the transit as a transit most of the time then when you want to go off, you just slide the pod in and Fay Presto, it's a camper.

I think you would loose too much interior space.

I like doing things comfortably, so:

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

…that's a Vango Tigris 600, officially a '6'-man tent, for the 2 of us (plus dog), including a carpet so it's a nice place to sit when it rains solid for 2 weeks.

We use Thermarest Dreamtime XLs for sleeping on. Expensive, but very comfortable. Without them, we would have had to give up camping up altogether due to bad sleep and aches and pains, so they're a good investment in my eyes.
