Lots of different threads about cars bought for fun, would be good to see what people have got in one place be they : Vans,Campers, sports cars, 4x4's, convertibles.

[img] [/img]

This one was mine, now sadly gone, hoping to get something sporty in the next year or so.

What you got ?

This is mine, I built it myself a few years ago and we've covered about 8000 miles since...

[img] [/img]

It's actually fitted with an MX-5 engine and 5 speed gearbox.

1983 Capri.

2.9 Cosworth V6. Uncorked and chipped, running over 230bhp.

Big brakes, Spax shocks, Recaro interior, poly bushed etc, etc...
It had pretty much everything you can do to a Capri. There is much more power available from different engines but the chassis is crap to be fair. Even with all the upgrades the handling was pretty dreadful. The big V6 made it a lot of fun but the handling discouraged aggressive driving so it was a nice cruiser. The only thing it was missing was an LSD which I was going to fit if I decided to keep it.

Ran it for just over a year and got a feature in Retro Ford magazine. It was mostly very reliable and very economical (compared to an original pinto or 2.8) but it did spit its dummy out a few times. I spent a lot of time spannering it but it when it ran it was perfect.

I wanted it, I did it, I loved it and I sold it.

No regrets!

Bought for £600 4 years ago , now running 465 bhp of fun . Nothing has been left un touched .
2.2 stroker kit , big valves and cams , ported head , custom inlet & exhaust manifolds . Garett 3071 turbo with Tial external wastegate . Link standalone engine managment and that's just the tip of a rather expensive iceberg when you consider the initial purchase price 🙂

Cinquecento sporting bought for a grand, then chucked a grand modifying it for trackdays and the ring trip. Engine swap from the little 1.1 to a 1.2 big valved, cammed and lightened engine, no interior bar seats and a cage, it was a bundle of fun.

Sadly no (digital ) pics but in 2000 i swapped a box company car for a very nice MR2 Roadster, silver with black leather and like a blooming go cart had it for three years until warranty was up and sold it as it was crap for anything other than top down days out with the missus, bought a new 307 hdi with the cash why? I still ask myself the same question.....

Another Clio, this time at Silverstone:

My last car before I emigrated. Now in the one of the most expensive countries to own a car so no more car ownership for me for a while.

I miss my Clio. 🙁

One like this:

[img] [/img]

So much fun, so much torque steer... but I could throw a bike and camping stuff in the boot without any issue and blast my way about the country/continent without an issue (and drop my mates Celica 190 at will)

I still have an urge to get a sports car one day, but there is no space to keep one here, or cash at the moment, so I have a motorbike for thrills 😉

Don't have a proper 'fun' car at the minute, although a Z4 Coupe could be classed in that vein I guess.

This was the last one I had:

Although I still have this one awaiting some spare time to get it back on the road (original picture so not current)

Pigface, not sure its not mine, I think its a 250 also 1980 RA model I think... They are the owned by the bloke I bought the RM off, if your in the market for anything CR of that vintage he is the man.

The orange bike in the background is the rare one an Aspes.

Had one of these as a last 'fun' car, but with kids it was immensely impractical and a money pit. This isn't mine, but it was the same model and colour.
Spitfire Four, the first Spitfire.

In a slightly different vein to some of the sporty numbers, but love it all the same.

In holiday mode in Pembrokeshire last year

[img] [/img]

If I had the funds / space I'd love a lightweight landy or a Mk1 GTI

Loved it, but equally was time to move on. Had it for 9 very fun years.

Will get another toy at some point.

Tinsy an Aspes 😆 fantastic things, there were lots of small Italian factories producing mad little 2 strokes back then. Ancillotti, Mazillis and the rest.

I bumped into a bloke the other week that had a shed full of amazing old MX bikes, he races a RM500 air cool, he had about 5 of them. a couple of YZ 465 all sorts. He also had Pro Circuit works KX450 from last year, Dear God talk about attention to detail, 5 engine settings hand crafted exhaust and swing arm etc etc

It may be an Alfa, but no 😆 , never did a head gasket, in fact it never broke down in 6 seasons of racing.

Pigface, yup the guy I bought the RM off has masses of bikes, some of which I have never seen before, (I am old & been involved since 78), nearly all unrestored but in good to mint condition, his passion is the CR & appears to have every model up to about 1984.

His passion is now his business, but my RM came out of his personal collection. Its just being re-commissioned now & a set of Ohlins fitted.
Watch this space I will do a Twinshock thread again once I have had chance to race it

Not bought specifically as a fun car, I was looking for a Volvo estate for bike moving duties, but this seemed to be a far more exciting prospect. Rubbish for transporting bikes but it made every journey a fun little event. Massive turbo, wobbly chassis, random auto kickdown and a heavy right foot made for ‘entertaining’ direction changes.

Now unfortunately about to go on ebay with a 99p start as I’ve been given an interminably dull 3 series saloon. So sad to see it go.

Drapoon, I beleive it, I had a very early 1.6 4 speed GTI, I think it was a 79 that was only about 6 years old when I had it & it was rusty as hell then!!! I had swapped a mk111 3.0 Ghia Capri for it.

The 79 gti's (series 1's) as they get called go for silly money nowadays

Unfortunately the only things that don't rust are the windows and tyres 🙂

My toy, 1.7 Racing Puma engine, 6 pot Wilwoods, H&R coilovers, polybushed.

I'm currently driving it daily, however it should be retired from daily use soon and just used for weekend fun/track days/Nurburgring trips etc.

It also reminds me of the Porsche in the film Commando.

My Corolla Compressor, one of only 250 made for the uk market. I wanted it the second I bought my original T Sport and after finally getting it I have just had to sell it to fund my honeymoon.
Car and bike sold in the same month!

Corolla is supercharged for the low end and has the VVTL-i lift for the top end. Was sooo much fun and I will be buying another when I get my MSc.

Bought and built a few, didn't want to sell any of them , so different.

Here's a selection of the last few:

The fast one, ate money and speeding warnings

6 litre magnum V8, mud tyres and no weight in the back, went sideways forever, someone off here has it now..

Things ended badly for this...

BUilt this, it had a 2.9 VR6 and no silencers, sounded unbelievable, hard slammed, plated sump, etc etc the one I should have kept...

This one is up for sale next week when I get round to it:

Pik n mix what are those like in the corners? I regularly see one (could of been you if your round north Wales) when commuting the long way home. He keeps up on the straights but hangs back round bends. I'm either in my celica or mr2 and I don't think he's realised it's the same person diff car.

Don't have a proper 'fun' car at the minute, although a Z4 Coupe could be classed in that vein I guess.

I've been looking at one of those as my 'impractical choice' as I have a hankering for something fun instead of buying a big diesel estate. My only requirement is that a car can take 2 adults and a springer so I need to find one and see if the springer fits in the hatch style boot.

Another sheep here. This has been brilliant, drove it to Italy and back this summer. Unfortunately need to sell it soon, looking to buy a moggy for some welding practise.

Jamabalya: Top one is Stelvio, bottom one is on Klaussen pass, I think. It was part of a european tour including Route Napoleon and others. Grossglockner and Furka are also good. Stelvio is very impressive but slow and a long way from others.Try here for ideas: http://www.alpineroads.com/

Worth being aware of timing as many roads are closed due to snow even quite late in the year.

XR3i then a RS Turbo, sold as everyone thought you were a chav.

Mondeo Si 4x4 because everyone would let you out feeling sorry for you but you had some horses, lower boxes and fun in the wet.
Audi A4 2.0 to impress a lady.
BMW E39 525 SE to impress another lady.

Now own a Mondeo mk 3 and keep looking at brand new MX-5's (but a new model is out next year though).

All my cars have been fun or the hot hatch version.

All my early cars were for fun. No digi pics I'm afraid as it was all pre internet and I can't be ar$$d scanning all the old photos. But my first was a VW T2 camper which I ended up having lowered and sprayed peppermint green and white. Followed by a T1 which was a labour of hate. Then a Beetle for my then gf and lastly a T3 camper. These days I drive a T5.

Built from the remains of my Locost and the first Fury. 1400 K-series, circa 500kg wet with no people onboard. Love doing the building, hate doing SVA/IVA bit. Noisy, horrible in the wet, but superb on chilly blue-sky mornings.

Bmw 320i coupe (E92) here. Slightly nippy but RWD and goes round roundabouts far quicker than is decent for a normal sort of car. I am perhaps biased but recent Bimmers do seem to grip and accelerate rather well ( even with pokey 170bhp)

With aftermarket tyres it was great, death trap with cheapo boots though.
I'm going out on a limb to say that he's not very good in the bends as the compressor is faster than most celicas and Mr2's if they are stock. I'm a massive Toyota fan boi and the comp is special.

Which celica have you got as obviously if its the GT4 your going to be more planted round the bends

eta.. My next compressor will be bought with a GR4 wrc so I can send it to fensport for a 4wd conversion. Then I think it will be pretty much perfect.

I always have the opening theme from the Italian job in my head when I drive it on twisty roads.

The boot is pretty big, people are usually surprised when they see it. It should take a springer I would have thought. A Z3 M Coupe (I had one about 13years ago) would definitely take a springer with ease.

What I see with all of these is the fun aspect, just making and everyday journey just a little bit special. No real hints of look at me ain't I rich, even with the more expensive ones.

Tuned or broken? Mine averages somewhere between 36-38mpg even when I'm using it for commuting

This for my wife on our 15th Wedding anniversary. It's a proper little sports car. Little being the operative word! We nearly sold it and bought an MX5 but decided to keep it another year. This is good as I've now decided I want an open top Jag 🙂

Some great pics up here. I'm getting that middle aged sports car feeling!
