My 9yr old now has an ipod touch (v v generous Grandma Claus this year!).

I'm struggling to find any good advice as to how to setup his ipod / the home mac / itunes / etc. so it's appropriate for a kid.
Someone must have done this before...?
I don't want to turn everything off.

ipod - I want to let him facetime and message with his mates, watch safe youtubes, browse safe web. I guess he needs an email account.

itunes - I already have an itunes account, lots of music/apps etc. Currently have a playlist set for syncing his ipod music.
Is there an advantage setting him up a 'no credit card' account? How can he still see all my music? Is there a 'home share' option in itunes?

Any help?

OpenDNS can restrict net surfing if set up on the router, but not 100% so you still need to monitor use. Not sure if it's possible to restrict youtube.

when I looked (about 18mo ago) you could only have either "on" or "off" for each feature, so allowing cbeebies on www also means potential access to razzle.com

as richmars says, open DNS or similar is an option - is applicable to all machines that use yr router so stuffs up your pron use too (unless you're very clever with routers) - the wife and I both use vaguely medical sites (and Czechdonkeysnuffpron.com of course 😉 ), some of which are blocked by default though you can make individual exceptions

dunno about itunes accounts - I set up new ones as I don't have an ipod/iphone anyway

You can see what porn does to a brain! jumpupanddown can remember the porn at 11, but can't remember posting about it 4 minutes before the second post 🙂

In a few words, OpenDNS checks the web addresses you or your son are trying to look at, and only allows things you've allowed. It's easy to set up if you have a fixed IP address from your provider, but still possible if you don't.
The advantage is that if you set it up on your router, it works with any connected device, pc, lap top, DS etc.

OpenDNS - had not spotted that before...looks like it could be v good.
Presume it does not care what service provider you have etc?
