MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
As far as I can remember the last time I sold a car was in the last century, I stuck an ad in the local newsagent, matey turned up for a sniff about then handed over a roll of notes.
This time it seems like it might be different. To start with the car is worth a bit more - probably £6 or £7k, and we have on line banking.
Having followed a few threads on here, I am kind of thinking Mr Buyer may want to pay by bank transfer, possibly by mobile phone banking. I don't have mobile banking but I do have internet banking, so am I right in thinking if he does pay on the phone I will be able to see it immediately on my laptop? (assuming I have my internet account open)
And is there anything else I should be aware of?
Yours, JR Hartley
Ebay classified advert (£20 for a month).
Lots of good pictures.
Aim high.
Bank transfer should arrive before the kettle has boiled.
I've sold load of motorcycles like this. The first one that went to Latvia worried me a bit!
Way to answer the question, stanley 😉

Yes - that will work. Although probably best avoid weekends, as banks shut all their pooters down on the weekends. Saves electricity I fink.
I bought a car recently this way. Sent the funds through my app, they didn't appear in the sellers account. We were then both stuck, I couldnt leave without the money or the car, and neither could he. Turned out my bank fraud department blocked it but unlike fraud transactions they didn't think to contact or notify me. Spent a stressful hour getting through to my bank (first direct who are normally pretty good) to fix it
Autotrader worked out for me. But that was a free listing as it was under 1k. First guy bought it. Online bank transfer after viewing.
There are lots more online ways to sell to dealers now. As yours isn't a banger and demand is high, they might be worth a look.

Ah, yes. Can't criticise them for that anyway. Buyer should always inform bank of likely transaction beforehand.
We buy any car? They seem to be paying over the odds at the moment.
thanks guys this is all really useful information.
It's the mil's car, she's had to give up driving now. As a low miles pensioner classic I am sure it'll go easily, I hadn't thought about the dealer/wbac option though. Might be worth exploring
I used Evans Halshaw recently, smooth service, paid exactly what they quoted online. They settled the outstanding finance directly while I waited, the rest was in my bank in seconds.
What I would say is, get the buyer to send you £1 first, just so the bank details are all good. Banks check account names when transferring online these days, to make sure the money goes to the correct account.
I’m always worried they could somehow claim the money back out so I move it straight away. I’m just old fashioned!!
I just sold my mums Seat Leon (same- too old to drive now).
I just walked into my local Seat dealer & they bought it on the spot for £7.5k
There is a big shortage of second hand cars.
I just did a quick surf of Autotrader and I am pretty surprised at the prices similar cars are going for now. I was about 25% under in my initial guesstimate
Yes, the lack of microchips for new cars has pushed up used price’s massively.
Can’t criticise them for that anyway. Buyer should always inform bank of likely transaction beforehand.
If there was a way of doing that through the app, sure. But if they offer high value payments online the whole journey should be there
I sold my van on Auto trader in the summer. I think it cost £30.
The people searching may be slightly different from eBay (don't know whether in a good or bad way) but the big plus is that they use a dummy phone number that forwards to yours so people can ring you but once it's sold you don't get daft phone calls or messages asking if it's still available (Facebook marketplace was terrible in this respect when my neighbour sold their vehicle on there).
Payment was done by bank transfer. Buyer logged on and did the transfer and it appeared in my bank a minute later.
Fortunately very easy but I was also lucky to find a good buyer.
What I would say is, get the buyer to send you £1 first, just so the bank details are all good.
I sold something for just over £2k, the buyer sent me £50 deposit as proof of good faith, to confirm the account number and to establish the connection with his bank - but they still blocked the main transfer.
I sold a car this week through motorway.co.uk It was very straight forward, I uploaded photos on Friday, car was listed on their website Monday morning, sold in the afternoon and collected by a dealer on Wednesday morning. Price was higher than I was expecting, and much better than WBAC.

I had the same with FD, but when I phoned them they wouldn't clear the funds. Said it would be donein two days. Problem was I was off on holiday for 2 weeks. So I asked them to cancel as I would use another account to pay, they said no problem. Only they didn't. So now the seller had twice the amount of money for the car and I was away.
Luckily he was pretty decent and paid it back straight to me. Could have been a lot worse and I don't mind saying I was bricking it as it was a fair amount.
I've used motorway. Very easy and reasonable figure.
I had a good experience selling via motorway too, I got 10% more than the dealer offered as trade in and it was a straightforward process. I suspect I'd have got a few quid more selling privately but it took away all the hassle that goes with that so I was happy. Bank transfer for £7.5k went through in less than a minute.

Ditto, paid £100 check payment for a motorbike, bank blocked the £4900 balance because of the two payments & fraud dept didn't work weekends 🙄 luckily I was buying off a mate.
We bought our van worth cash. That wasn't the plan, but despite the GF checking with her bank that she could make an "instant transfer" and the money would be on the guys dank account straight away it turns out that she couldn't transfer more than a few K instantly.
Had to rush to the next town and find the only branch of that bank that was open for the next twenty minutes. Surprisingly we were able to pick up 29k in cash without any prior notification.
Never seen so many 500€ notes.
Sold the GF's mx5 yesterday. 3800€ cash.
Sold my T5 back in April/May for 25K and had to wait the best part of a week for the money to clear. Let the family take the motor regardless... He was some high-up military guy. Had his card, number and figured he was easy enough to trace if the money didn't turn up.
Also sold a car via Motorway, again pretty painless but the buyer had to move the car from Troon to somewhere in Derbyshire so took a few days to organise. Finance payoff to Toyota was a bit of a panic but managed to get them to confirm the payment had gone through after 15 minutes on the phone. That was Toyota's issue not the buyer. Would sell with them again.
once it’s sold you don’t get daft phone calls or messages asking if it’s still available (Facebook marketplace was terrible in this respect when my neighbour sold their vehicle on there).
If you mark the ad as sold you don't get that problem.
Good question
