My Mrs is getting a nice brand new lease car, thanks to work & the stealer have offered to buy her old car for £600.

Its one of the last shapes Mazda 323 sports 03, with 48k on the clock.

Now we know there are a few problems with it.

both rear tyers keep going down, take a week or so, but tried to get it sorted at a tyre shop, but they cannot find a fault with the rims tyre or valve?.

It had some welding done near the engine mount where a rust hole the size of your fist appeared in the inner arch area, this was done to get through a mot & tbh its a bit of a ugly looking repair, which I was never happy with.

3 of the arches are bubbling & will pop within a year I guess & the front bonnet metalic paint has faided badly, again from a cheap repair job before we owned it.

Apart from that the engine runs sweet, gearbox & clutch and all electrics are fine, brakes recently checked and are sorted.

So, its not 100% and its not a valuable car tbh.

My Mrs is pushing to sell it privatly, looking at some of the autotrader prices, cleaned up, they are being touted for anything from £800-£2200.

I would want to sort out the tyres and get the welded plate sorted so I am happy with it, just for peace of mind, if I did sell it?

What would you do, trade, sell for parts, private sale with work done to put it right?

What bangers with faults have you sold or tried to sell in the past.

If its a bit of a shed but got MOT, it might be worth getting a price from webuyanycar.com

I've got a couple of mates who've sold sheds on to them and got decent money considering the state of them!

Whether I could be arsed to sell privately would depend a lot on where in the £800-£2200 range your car's going to be, so without knowing that...

Do you want people who can only afford an £800 car coming to your house to view it?

If I could get £600 for no work and no comeback, I know what I'd do...

My missus clio has had about £300 of work done in the past year, (throttle valve issues) needs another £200 to get it though the MOT (pair of wheels, suspension link) and I don't know if it's worth it bothering. If someone offered me £600 for it today I'd bite their arm off, honestly, and not being harsh, it sounds in far better nick than the Mazda.

Don't bother fixing anything...just wack it on Ebay with an honest description.

Alternatively...just let it go for £600.

I'd have a look on ebay and see whether there's a market for similar cars and what sort of price they go for.

Assuming there is, and the price is a worthwhile amount more than the dealer is offering then just auction it. Put in as much info and as many pictures as possible, including all the problems that you're aware of, but emphasise the good points as well (service history, MoT, tax, how long you've owned it for etc). If you're honest with the description then (in my experience) most people are reasonable to deal with.

I've sold 3 cars and a motorbike via ebay without problem. The most relevant example would be my daughter's S-reg Fiesta which I sold this way late last year. It had plenty of minor scuffs and scratches and a bit of rust on the rear wheel arches, but good history and 12 months MoT (albeit this required some work to achieve, all of which I documented). It sold for £750 - about twice what I expected and the buyer was over the moon with it.

On the other hand, if there aren't many about or they don't sell well then save yourself the hassle and just shift it via the dealer.

Good point oliverd1981

My guess it might be worth £1500, if I got the work done, I dont know?

It might cost £300-400 I guess to put it right?

Most of it sounds cosmetic (apart from the tyres).

How much tax/test has it?

If its got a good few months I think you'll be suprised with how much Ebay might yield.

It sounds like it would cost more to get the repairs done to a decent standard than you would get by selling it privately!

Trade it in and get rid, unless you could get all the work done yourself itll cost a fair chunk!

Good cut and Polish, good pictures, detail the history - Ebay it

If its got a long MOT you`ll do ok on it, a good Cut and polish will make the bubbly bits less noticable but wont hide them.

Be honest, dont worry about the wing repair, mention it in the description and that it was done to MOT Standard rather than Concours 😉
I`d take the wheels off, pump them up to 60 psi and really soap them up all over, not just the tyres(do the wheels inside as well incase they are cracked / porous) move the valve around etc

if you put enough soap on them with that pressure, you will see a leak somewhere after an hour or so, it`ll be a collection of tiny tiny bubbles 😉

At least then you can advertise it honestly without worrying a wheel is about to collapse !!

If its shown to be tyre, then there is a "Stans" equivalent to seal up but I`d just be honest in that it takes a while to go down ?

The buyer knows it then and it wont make a difference

Having been in a similar position with a 3k car (private sale or trade in) I can now say that I should have traded it in as the time, effort and cost of the private sale in no way made up for the difference between the trade in price and the price I actually sold it for.

Why don't you just go the whole hog and just refer to everyone less [s]fortunate[/s] worthy than yourself as the frightful lower orders? Or maybe just 'scum' to save your valuable breath?

But how would 'they' then refer to you? as 'Sir' or 'my liege' as they doffed their caps and tugged their forelocks?

My cars worth less than that, but I do have a BA Silver Exec card.

I load my bag with the food to take back to my starving children 😀

I got rid of an old Mazda 323 last year. Put it on ebay with an honest, warts and all description.

I guarantee that within a matter of hours you'll have a load of messages from traders offering you a cash price. Take the highest. I did. He came and picked it up that afternoon.

Or just take the money.

binners has it right - make it look tidy, advertise in on AutoTrader/eBay, and be honest. The tyres thing could well be due to porosity in the wheels, btw - not expensive to sort, just hassle.

Sell it quickly, make a few quid more than the trade-in, and be happy.

Wash, take a few photos, and put it on Ebay with a detailed description. 99p, no reserve. Always gets me more than I'd even think of for an asking price!
