My mum does voluntary work three days a week in the cafe of the local dogs home.
In the volunteers secret Santa my mum has drawn a middle aged vegan woman and has no idea on what to buy her.
The limit is £7, all ideas welcome.

I am not sure if dietary requirements would be my main guide for buying a Christmas present?

My mum does not know the lady as she volunteers elsewhere in the home.
But was told when she drew the lady in question that she was a vegan so if her present was food to make sure it was acceptable and also no make up in case it had been tested on animals (that's what they told her).

But wine could be a good call.

Booja Booja truffles are very nice. Or Faith in Nature do nice mini gift sets (shower gel etc) for around £7.
And this is the best vegan chocolate bar ever http://www.vego-chocolate.com/indexeng.html

Veganism is probably more of a "lifestyle" than a set of "dietary requirement" as the implications go much further than what you eat and drink. E.g. a pair of woollen gloves, nope. A silk tie, no. It really does require a fair bit of thought if you're not used to it.

Can we turn this into a veggie/vegan bashing thread?

Can I mention how many furry animals are killed by combine harvesters? 🙂

I'd up it a little and get a vegan sidekick book - they're ****ing brilliant and available in non-sweary.

Well personally I'd rather not and it certainly wasn't my intention to do so. It was more to highlight the fact that the implications of someone identifying as Vegan probably goes a bit further than food and drink and does require a bit of thought.

I genuinely laughed at that

Cycling is probably more of a "lifestyle" than a set of "[s]dietary requirement[/s] bikes" as the implications go much further than what you [s]eat and drink[/s]ride. E.g. [s]a pair of woollen gloves, nope. A silk tie, no[/s]what size wheels, what tyres for this trail, etc. It really does require a fair bit of thought if you're not used to it.

I can do that with anything

Can we turn this into a veggie/vegan bashing thread?

I think it would be hard to stop it but i so enjoy it because eating meat clearly makes folk [s]theink they are [/s] ****ing hilarious

You could show her this thread and then get her a sewing kit for when her sides have split.

Given where she volunteers, what about a doggie-themed calendar perhaps?

I am sorry I did not know this would happen. My mum genuinely did not know what to buy. But amongst the bacon related posts there have been some helpful posts,
Thanks.

Forget Booja-booja, this is the stuff you want:

IME this is the best vegan chocolate alternative out there by a long way.

If not just to avoid the wrath of the grumpy vegans, a few minutes googling and [s]years of experience with women[/s] no idea about women, I've come up with:

this

or

this.

Neither of which I'm sure are of any good, because I'm a non-grumpy chicken choker.

I'm not vegan but enjoy experimenting with vegan cooking as it helps with gettinga more varied, healthy ddiet and I've discovered the wonder ingredient chia seeds. So how about a big bag of organic ones or a jar of organic coconut oil should be about £7 quid. Made a vegan pumpkin and sweet potato pie with pecan topping last weekend with both those ingredients in. It was bloody lush!

Isn't this a pumpkin and sweet pot pie with the word vegan in front of it?

Genuine question, but do vegans come across as bit 'fighty' because it's here, or a really strong belief in choices that comes with being a vegan?

Shit jokes are often made on many threads *holds hands up*, but just ignore them?

Rather than do the whole "try to avoid offending a weirdo" thing by attempting to think of a gift that involves no meat and/or animal byproducts, just tackle it head on and go for something really vegan specific...

Surely one of those Table Tennis sets with a clip on net is the only right answer in this scenario...

Failing that, I'd go to a charity shop and see what can be found~ one of my favourite purchases is a Wind Up Sumo Smash set

It's not a lack of a sense of humour amongst vegans nor general STW contrary grumpiness, but rather that the "jokes" are the same lazy, tired comments that get trotted out every. single. time. someone poses any sort of vaguely veggie / vegan related question.

If the best thing you can come up with is "what should I buy a vegan?" - "meat" then perhaps the best thing you can bring to the discussion is silence. I mean, really, it's surely an easy target so there must be richer pickings, is that absolutely the best you can do? Come up with something original and I'll laugh as loudly as anyone.

It wasn't meant to be offensive, honesty.

It's not offensive, to me at any rate; the professionally offended of STW may beg to differ I suppose. It's just so very tedious.

Thread experiment:

Thread a. What are the best crisps? (Discuss crisps)

Thread b. What are the best vegan snacks? (Attack strawmen with the ferocity and Dunning-Kruger grade wit reminiscent of Daily Mail readers commenting on cyclists)

No as it has no butter, cream or eggs in it. I'd never made vegan pastry before but it came out great.

Never mind all the vegan talk. How busy do dog homes get that they need their own cafe?

It's quite s big dogs homes, so people who work at and come to see the dogs use it.
But they also have lots of regulars who just come in for the cafe. the far end of the cafe away from the food counter you are allowed to bring your dogs in as long as you don't let them sit on the seats.

Go with the non-vegan specific fun option then it's a non issue. Just don't wrap it up too tightly.

Ah, of course. I assumed that the sweet potato was the pie topping, not pastry, and wouldn't use butter, cream or eggs anyway, in that sort of thing anyway.

(One of my current bugbears is when a recipe describes something just to jump on a bandwagon eg gluten free tomato soup. Well, made properly tomato soup is gluten free anyway so why the need for the 'gluten free' bit?)
