So planning on buying a second hand car tomorrow afternoon. I'm lining up 24hr insurance for the test drive, and to drive it home if I buy it.
But I read on line that tax is now "non transferable", wtf does that mean in practice? Do I have to tax it before driving home, or by the end of the currently taxed month?
Tax it before driving home it's mega easy to do can even set it up as a monthly debit.
Tax ends as soon as the seller registers it as sold. Ie that day. So if you buy a car in the last few days of the month you have to pay a full months tax for those few days.
I don't know if there is any grace period for you to drive home, seems silly that there isn't (they should allow 48hrs IMO) but if the seller cancels the tax say in the evening and gives you time to get home...
but you must then tax it yourself immediately. Or do it on your smart phoen before you leave?
by law you should tax straight away.
reality - tax doesnt end till DVLA recieves the V5 form from the seller....
So you wont get flagged by a ANPR but you have an accident - yer untaxed.
There is no grace period so far as I'm aware.
You will need to tax it before you drive it home.
OK, cheers all. Pretty much what I thought. To be certain, need to tax before driving home.
I'm just about to tax a car I'm looking to sell. Do the changes mean I'm wasting my cash ie not adding value to the car as it's non transferable & I can't claim back unused tax? Maybe I should try to sell before the end of the month...
fooman you can claim back any unused months of tax. Whole months only.
or just switch to monthly. Cost is slightly higher per month but you just cancel it when it's gone.
deadeasy.. you can only tax it though after the seller has registered it as sold.. so drive it home..

Are you sure about that ? 😉
That is absolutely untrue.
I know this because i recently had to move the owner ship of a car between me and the mrs for insurance purposes .
I was able to tax it using the new keepers slip in my name and then send off the v5 and get a refund for the remaining tax that was in her name.
If you buy from a car dealer the car will be untaxed, the dealer will probably show you have to tax it on line.
If private, the then tax is non transferable, have a look on the DVLA website its pretty straight forward.

The dealer taxed my car for me before I collected it.
I did it on my phone last time, really easy with new website
