The same reason mountaineers do when they aren't attached to something.
When your mate drops a big spanner on your head from 30ft above, you don't want to get knocked silly.

I was in Sudan working on a rig at the same time as a yank derrick builder. He was just clambering around up there with no protection, had a chat with the OIM who told me tha'ts just the way they do it and as long as nothing happened then everybody is happy. Some crazy arse yanks out there.
