I'm still ashamed, but also quietly proud, of my lasagne binge over the Christmas break. I love a good sausage roll, but lasagne is what will kill me.

I’m no saint but i have moved away from white flour/vegetable fat/refined sugars to the point that a greasy Greggs sausage roll would probably make me feel a bit sick (not that i have ever eaten anything from Greggs)

I call it ‘brown food’ still have a fried breakfast now and again or croissants with jam and a coffee on the side for a sugar/caffeine wake-up but having watched somebody with a poor diet have a heart attack and become diabetic at 45 a few years back was all the incentive i needed.

still eat crisps though..

Cougar. The white flour in the roll has had a lot of processingnto remove much of its nutrients and often has sugar and salt added and the bacon has been pumped full of water salt and nitrites iirc

I tried finding the study as I'm genuinely surprised that Sausage Rolls are a big thing in Florida...

While I might have some doubts about a study by a 16 Yr old school kid I have to admire her for this...

The new findings come from 452 participants ages 13 to 19 in the Processed Intake Evaluation (PIE) study.

You shouldn’t eat scotch eggs. The amount of sausage meat they have to force feed scotch chickens to make them lay is cruel. It’s like fois gras for hens.

You just can’t get away from the fact that a Greggs sausage roll is the ideal chaser to a cheese and onion pasty or a steak bake.

It is the single whisky to their pint of Stella

So it’s not really a gateway, more a back door

Ooooh,someone mentioned lasagne.we do a lucky dip lasagne which is made up of leftovers from from curries, chillies,spagbols and meatballs.

Lasagne is positively healthy compared to the bolegnase Parmo which is basically a lasagne with the pasta sheets replaced by deep fried chicken and chips.
Bloody lovely.

I’ve heard rumour that it Scotlandshire you can get lasagna pies, though I have never yet experienced such a wonder

I did have the carb-coma of a Mac and cheese pie while I was up there last year though and it was awesome as it sounds

- although Scotch Eggs, especially vegetarian baji style, are ultra processed foods. Enjoy it if you want, but don't mistake it for healthy.

Wandered into our local bakery for some sourdough and came out with a hot beef fajita pie, was bloody amazing.

What were we talking about?

Im not sure i would ever have classed sausage rolls as ultra-processed. Maybe the supermarket brands.

From working as a butcher so many years its one of the products we made ourselves, and there was little to making them. Some minced lamb or beef, seasonings, onion and pastry, a bit of egg yoke to glaze

Couple of angled cuts to let the steam out.

I sometimes think they just include foods to promote ever changing ideals or trends..

Didn't someone on STW make (invent?) a lasagne pie forever ago? One of the Drs maybe, DrP or DrJ? Maybe on a National Pie Week thread of years past.

FTFY.

To be fair, the quality of the meat itself won't have any real effect on the nutritional value, or even the taste. Thing is that sausages usually have a lot of fat and preservatives, plus the pastry is basically just white flour and butter, and whatever sauce you have it with will have lots of sugar and salt. That's why they are so delicious.

The ultra-processed label (if they're using the Brazilian scale) is anything with 5 or more ingredients in it. French baguette would not be an ultra-processed food by this measure (white flour (no improvers), salt, yeast and water). One of the older (pre 2021) Angry Chef blog posts has more on this.

Another Scottish one,very much in the spirit of battered Mars bars is the Scotch Creme Egg.
Being a veggie I've not tried one but I like the idea, might try to make my own with some falafel in place of the meat

I'm fat and I don't even care about sausage rolls that much, can't remember the last time I had one. So I think this study is bogus.

I noticed a TV advert for Birds Eye Green Cuisine Chicken Free Dippers the other day and was curious about what they are made from. This is it: Powered by plants, Meat-Free, Source of Protein and Fibre, No artificial colours or flavours, Suitable for Vegans

Or in other words:

Rehydrated Pea Protein (27%), Water, Flour (Wheat, Maize), Vegetable Oil (Rapeseed, Palm, Sunflower), Wheat Gluten (4%), Gelling Agent (Calcium Alginate), Stabiliser (Methylcellulose), Citrus Fibre, Natural Flavourings, Maize Starch, Salt, Raising Agents (Disodium Diphosphates, Sodium Carbonates), Potato Protein, Dextrose, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Maltodextrin, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin

It's a good job that they are green and meat free otherwise people might think that they are unhealthy!

I have tried to drop most of my UHPF’s. 3kg off in a month.

There is a ten part BBC podcast oh the subject. By the twin Dr brothers, it’s really good, and one on processed bread on the Food Programme I think.

I eat healthy 80/20, but i think food has changed since we were kids. Some for the good and some not so.

I say eat good stuff most of the time and then 20% eat what you want. I love a good sausage roll 😬
