Is it a sausage roll? Is it a cake? Or is it even a lasagne?
Mrs 100th used to be on shift with a guy who would have a macaroni pie in a roll. Triple carbs. His idea of a salad also had a pie in it, just to add to the cardiac issues these are scotch pies.
Probably something a bit more upmarket than Greggs, but still…
No Greggs in Windsor, but there is the fabulous Heidi bakery in Daniels. And Daniels holds a Royal Warrant.
Now if they had trialled mini pork pies, that would have been more interesting.
There is a ten part BBC podcast oh the subject. By the twin Dr brothers, it’s really good,
It was excellent, I listened to it after a recommendation on here
I personally wouldn't ever buy a sausage roll from a bakers, Greggs or otherwise.
Not good.
Get them out your local butchers, much better.

Then you’re massively missing out on some bloody lovely stuff. Why in the name of all that is holy would you not buy a sausage roll from a bakers? A lot of them are bloody good at them. The clue’s in the name

Yes, amazed it hasn't got its own thread. Oh...

Because he is, or was, a butcher. (IIRC)
There’s a reason Gregg’s sausage rolls come in a pack of four, and it’s not for sharing!
I made sausage rolls for the 1st time the other day. Holy crap they were amazing and so easy to make. Nicer than the poshest sausage roll I've ever bought from a deli. The sausage meat wasn't a fancy one and quite fatty, i added a line of crack lao gan ma crispy chilli oil to one and homemade tomato chilli jam to the other and topped both with a little cheddar. Dangerous and definitely a gateway to something if not careful.
I keep some of the Iceland Greggs sausage rolls in the freezer for emergencies, there’s only so much Mediterranean diet you can take 🙂
I’ve missed the Christmas special ones thou.
Cornish Pasties are my gateway food fosho.
Anyway getting back on topic not sure why they’ve targeted sausage rolls as a gateway foood and tbh it’s just calories like all the other shite people eat, you could make a salad worse if you added enough sweet sauces and pasta, cheese etc.

Standard distraction bollocks though isn't it?
People are eating more than they're burning and this is simy tip toeing around the fact that a great many people without good reason are idle, we've been on a sedentary arc for quite a while.
Welcome to the downside of all that body positive bullshit.

I think because a Greggs sausage roll is used as a benchmark for all kinds of things as they sell about 7 squllion of them a day. Theres an absolutely fascinating documentary about this. I know you're not meant to let light in on magic, but...

When Maccy D's introduced salads they did exactly this and they ended up, famously, with a higher calorie count than having a burger

Its the level of meat content. Considerably lower compared to from a Butchers.
For example in a butchers, a sausage roll might have about 60% meat(or higher, in somewhere like greggs its under 20%. BUT, you need to keep in mind what the law says constitutes as meat. Fat is effectively meat. Its because its not listed as 'lean' meat.
Another example would be a 'steak bake' there it's about 30% but this is a bit misleading, because the gravy is also classed as meat.
I've made a lot of sausages,so i understand what is in them and the law concerning what constitutes meat content but in one place we made commercial bakers sausage, and that i would judge is 80% pure fat. I was a bit taken aback by what goes into them and how different it is from the products we make in retail sales, so on that I've vowed never to touch the stuff.

Simple to do. There are pics of my efforts on the last thing made thread (marmite and cheddar sausage rolls and cheddar and chilli jam sausage rolls). I make them infrequently to stop us being house sized! (Forum search not working so I'm struggling to find the link).
@dyna-ti - I know exactly what you're saying (the butchers down the road does an absolutely awesome chorizo sausage roll) but surely its not exclusively meat content that makes up the joy and wonder that is a sausage roll?
We could soon get a militant baker on the thread saying 'PFFT! What the bloody hell would a butcher know about making pastry'
I'm equal opportunities myself. I'll eat any sausage roll from butchers, bakers and ... erm... possibly not candlestick makers. But you never know.... 😀
Aye, don't confuse a waxy feel with a greasy feel...
