after an ill advised photo session by the wife on a windy beach our fairly new Sony digital camera no longer works - when you switch it on the zoom lens thing won't come out and the camera asks to be switched off again.
I can only assume sand has got into the motor.
so whats my best option for getting it fixed?
1 - take it back to currys where I bought it - assume that sand damage will not be covered under warranty, also I assume they will want to send it away and may not actually be up to the job of fixing it at all
2- take it to a specialist camera shop to sort out
3 - something else

How old/new is it? If it's brand spanking, then clean it up/take it back and feign innoncence to get a replacement.
If it's still in warranty, then you can put a warranty claim in, but they might just open it up and say, 'erm, you've got sand in it and that's not covered by waranty'.
If it's out of warranty, probably not worth getting it repaired as the cost of repair is likely to be more than cost of camera....

i can here the sand grinding when I switch it on - there's no way I'm going to get away with a warranty claim
its a couple of a hundered pounds worth of camera (I think - haven't dug out the receipt yet) - will it really be more than that to fix?
Ebay it with a description of the fault. Someone will want it.
1- the standard manufacturer guarantee will not cover it, sorry.
2- expensive, I don't know of any repair agents that will touch a bad case sand infestation.
3- Tim, does your home contents cover it against accidental cover away from home?

good point - I have M&S insurance and pay extra for the "away from home" cover (with bikes in mind)
that could be the way to go - I'll call them
