We will be in touch
I am off to California for a three week honeymoon shortly and our first 5 days will be spent in San Francisco. We have all sorts planned but wondered if anybody could recommend a really nice restaurant for a special, romantic evening.
Thank you for your help.
We did san fran for our honeymoon. If only i could remember the name of this specific restaurant, ..... The best POrk ever eaten, huge pork steaks and so soft, I'm dribbling at being reminded of it, I'll ask the wife tonight see if she can remember it. Frank's Hotel has a great restuarant but generally just wonder and see what takes your fancy. We did and found only good places. check the prices of wine though, easy rip off here.... we got burnt with a $35 bottle. Though it was lovely
PS ignore the down and out's and don't have a go back when one of them shouts obscene things at you and good lady wife.

Thanks for the tip spw3 but that's a bit of a drive from San Francisco!!!
Taxi, or even a bus. Didn't seems that far when I went TBH.
French Laundry if you are feeling very rich.
Cocktail at the Top of the Mark for the views.
Le Colonial in Cosmo place - one of my favourite restaurants
Treat yourself to a bottle of Benzinger whilst you're there!
Cliffhouse does good Oysters.
Gary danko best. Restaurant in sf.
I liked Lulu's on Fulsom. If you're there on Sunday, brunch at the Top of The Mark is an experience.
head chef is Chris Cosantino, ex pro MTB racer and all round nice guy
food is amazing but not cheap 😉

Thank you for all the help, I really appreciate it!
We are staying at the Mark Hopkins Hotel so can't wait to check out the bar.
If you like sushi and sake, there's a very nice sushi place in the business district that's worth a look in. I can't remember the name, just have a very blurred photo of the sign. It begines with "Oz". Either way, it's worth a look in.
Not sure if it would be considered a "romantic evening" restaurant, but I can definitely recommend taking a trip through Golden Gate park and having a meal in The Beach Chalet overlooking the Pacific.
Particularly their "Circle of beers"

A couple I can recommend are Nettie's crab shack (try the Crab BLT) and the Franciscan on the bay front.

Can recommend* The Stinking Rose though not if either of you isn't a fan of Garlic.
* That's based on going there 18 years ago so may have changed a bit
slanted door to if you like veitnamese/asian fusion stuff
Speeder... Nope, it's still there and still good if you like garlic. Just up the road from the Scientology place too, so you could heckle for a bit and then eat.
Surprised "Forbes Island" floating restaurant at Pier 39 hasnt already had a mention. May require booking in advance though.

Gary danko best. Restaurant in sf.
Absolutely. One of the best restaurants on the west coast.
I've eaten there countless times, and every time I take a friend/client who hasn't been before, it instantly makes it into their favourite restaurant list.
Outstanding food, unparalleled wine list, attentive and supremely knowledgable staff, just the right level of formality (not pretentious but you do feel like you're eating somewhere a bit special).
I've made the trip from San Diego to San Francisco to meet a client I don't really like or get much work from, solely because they proposed that we all go to Gary Danko.
There's not many restaurants in the US that I tell people that they "must" visit if they are in the area, but this is one of them.
If you like food and you're in San Francisco, you would honestly be missing out if you don't go.
😀
EDIT: I know how much some people like tripadvisor, so if it's of any interest, Gary Danko is rated #1 out of all 3051 restaurants listed in SF.
The bar where you're staying "The Top of the Mark" is amazing - great cocktails, jazz and views over the city.
For eating I would suggest Delfina's for some of the best Pizza in SF. We went to the one in the Mission and it was excellent.
Slightly more upmarket is The Slanted Door - www.slanteddoor.com for amazing Vietnamese.
BIX or Mortons for me. Simple and laaaaverly...
Isn't Chez Panisse the place to go? Got French Laundry down on my to-do-before-I-die list.

I liked the cheesecake factory but it's not exactly romantic. If you're in san fran you have to go to Bubba Gumps.
If you want somewhere to go for a top meal then Izzy's Steak & Chop House is pretty special with a great backstory to go with your meal. I think it's probably my favourite meal of my life so far.... definitely worth checking out...
also went to SF on honeymoon, and ate in the Stinking Rose our first night there.
The paper was peeling off the walls of our hotel room the next morning.

Marin County, Cali
I live 20 miles from SF and I haven't been to any of those places save one, which was the Cliff House. Unfortunately I was there for a wedding reception and found the mas produced food ordinary.
OTOH, why don't you ditch the wife and nip over to Marin County for a ride? We have a few restaurants here too.
+1 Repack rider I ate at the Cliff House a few years ago and thought that, while it was good, didn't measure up to the hype.
There are so many good restaurants in the Bay Area you could eat out every night for a year and not cover them all. I haven't been out there in a few years, but plenty to choose from--some of the best, as I recall, aren't the most pubished or advertised.
