It'll not be long before the fan boys are out for each side of iOS versus Android. Suffice to say, both do good jobs at what they are meant to. Android does some things better, iOS does other things better. Neither are perfect.

Me personally, I thought I would want all the fancy bells and whistles of new phones, but the reality these days are that I use the phone bit texting, the maps and occassional internet searches. I like Android at the moment cause I'm able to pre-cache all the street map data for the area I work in onto the phone ... which helps me find places quickly and not need a signal ( my previous iphone didn't cache the data ) I sometimes listen music on it. I dont play games on it, I dont do facebook etc etc.

A phone like you suggest will easily do all of those things. May help if you list what you are looking for / expecting.

Go and hold some of the newer phones in the shops. Something like a Galaxy is considerably larger than the iphone and I dont think as easy to hold as the 3GS ( which i think is one of the best handling feels about )

My SGS2 ( predecessor to Galaxy Nexus I suppose ) feels large and a little frustrating as its often sometimes a little too big to do a thumb swipe to unlock it with one hand.

pssst - just to through a spanner in: was in carphone warehouse tonight and had a play with the new Nokia Lumia ... its really niiice

the camera is not as good as other top end phones, build quality may be a little more plasticky than other top end phones, no idea what Android ICS will be like, there were good and bad things about Gingerbread, i imagine it will have a few more bugs than your iphone, but will have some extra functionality that you may or may not need.

Isn't that more to do with the app you use? I'm sure there's quite a few that cache Open Street Map data. ViewRanger's free app certainly does, plus it gives you the option of buying OS and foreign map data too.
[edit] Oh, and there's UK Map, by Phil Endecott, that allows you to download free 1:25k and 1:10k OS maps. The maps are native to the phone and work offline, and you can just keep adding maps until you run out of space. Great app, I use it a lot. Rights of way data comes from OpenStreetMap, as OS won't release that data.

Had a play with one in the O2 shop the other day and I'm totally sold on it. ICS looks and works great and it'll probably be the only ICS phone that isn't skinned.

Will be getting rid of my iPhone 4 as soon as they fix the volume bug problem on the Nexus

Looks super sweet 🙂 However, lots of £££ and no SD slot.

Had one for 4 days - loved it, it got stolen (pic-pocketed at a gig) had to go back to my wildfire - gutted!

It seemed to be a really decent phone, quick good UI, simple to use - battery life was a bit weak, but it had a massive screen and live wallpaper so it was never going to last for years.

I'd definately get one again, just as soon as I have some funds to do it.

I wanted the iPhone 4S to be a 5, and was disappointed when it wasn't slimmer with a larger screen... Galaxy Nexus seems to offer those things, plus I've wanted to try Android for a while.

Ice Cream Sandwich (android 4.0) is a big leap forward over previous versions android.

Have a play with one in a shop and see if you like it.

If you aren't bothered about that, the the Samsung galaxy s2 is pretty similar hardware wise and cheaper.

Just got a galaxy note and it is nuts! If you've got big hands and like drawing with a proper stylus it is the phone for you.
