[Closed] Saab 9-5 estate diesel Boot space ? anyone got one ? would you buy a saab?

Anyone got one ? boot space is apparently 416 litre this cant be right they look far bigger than that.

what are the diesel auto's like ?

reliable ?

The 416lts mentioned is just the boot upto the windows, with the seats down the measurements 1500lts, which is pretty big. I don't think they are as big as an Audi A6, but they normally come for sale a lot cheaper!

1500lts, is pretty big, although my Kia Sedona is 3000lts without the seats in!

I've got a 93 estate. Can fit two bikes and bits in the back with loads of room to spare, can't imagine that the 95 wouldn't be even better.

Have only had it a couple of weeks so can't really comment on reliability. I'm happy with it and it drives nicely. 150 bhp Diesel plenty fast enough and returning 40mpg so far, not brilliant but then my alleged 62mpg Aygo never managed that on my stop-start commute.

Don't worry about parts. The cars have been in production for ages relatively unchanged and there are plenty of independents as well as the official dealers. 88 dealers are staying on as there are 188,000 SAABs in the UK and the parts form is a separate entity.

On my second petrol, after 7 years I was happy to get another, boot space is reasonable but with the load cover shut it is a letterbox shape so actually less than the saloon for everyday use, but when you need more space load cover off and its reasonable.
Diesel - 2.2 chain drive is old tech but keeps going - 1.9 is the common fiat/GM - cambelt and associated modern diesel issues - egr problems etc. Both have good mpg
Petrol - need oil changes to avoid sump clogging .
If you do short journeys the diesels will not be happy long term.
Petrol cars do 35+mpg on long runs - mid 20's on short runs.

If you have a decent indy for servicing then the costs are reasonable.

Parts - as above poster there will be parts - there are specialist breakers DCA in Berkshire and neo brothers + more.

The 93 is a far more troublesome car, 95 is older design but more solid.and suffers no electrical gremlins like those that make the 93 a lottery.
95 is far better value than 93.

Saab is a rebadged Astra/Vectra. The 1.9 Tdi isn't renowned for it's reliability. I would go for a Mondeo or Passat if it was my money. I've got the Mondeo TDCI 130 so I may be a little biased. Check Honest John for Reviews from himself and other owners then make up your mind if you still want one. Octavia is still a good choice but smaller than both of these. All Diesels can have issues with DMF's, DPF's and injection systems to be honest. I'm doing nearly 20K a year so the fuel cost savings at the moment are quite considerable.

saab is not a rebadged anything. It shares a floorpan with other GM cars, including the vectra. but pretty much the rest of the car is all different (saab re-engineered the suspension pick-ups, lengthened the floorpan for the 9-5, the 2.0 and 2.3l petrol engines are saab developed)

personally i prefer the petrol versions to the diesels. mine is a 2.0l - get on average on the weekly commute about 450miles for 60-65litres - and a long run (ie manchester to Eindhoven) we were getting 520-550miles out of the tank (cruise control set to 70mph all the way from Calais to Eindhoven)

reliability wise - ours is on 183000 miles and is 10 years old (had it for 6 years, and it had 95000 miles on the clock then.) the only problems we have is that its at the age now where the rubber vacum pipes are becoming pourous, but tis usually a quick fix, and is something that can happen to any car.

Oil wise - basically run all petrol SAABs on fully synth oil, and change at 6-12k mile intervals (unless doing lots of short driving, like 2-5miles a day for months on end, when oil should be changed after 3k miles)

I'm on my third 9-5 estate, this time a 2.2 diesel. Engine is a bit agricultural, but I love it. Bike (hardtail) and wheels will go in the boot with the cover over them.

9-5 may be bigger numbers wise, but after looking at estate cars with a view to fitting the GF's harp in, the 9-3 has a more usable boot. Can get 6'x4' in flat in the 9-3, but the arches were closer together in the 9-5 and would need to turn the harp to get it past the arches.

Settled for a Mondeo in the end as couldn't afford a 9-3 and because being a Ford, everything for it is cheap.

I've driven a 1.9 diesel manual and that was hateful so I can't imagine how bad it'd be with a auto box. It was slow, noisey and unrefined even for a diesel, if you want a 95 then the only sensible option is a turbo petrol.

Clearly no knowledge of Saab, and suggesting a ford, tut tut. My Aero 93 is 11 years old, got a boot with an echo, and crazy fast for an front wheel auto. There are some lovely features of Saab that I would missed, the cockpit and the black out panels for starters.

I had what I would call a proper Saab. A T16 Aero with 238k on it when I sold it to a friend who lovingly restored it. The diesels are GM units and are not that reliable. The petrol units are great but very thirsty. It amazes me when people spout MPG figures on this forum taken straight from their trip computer's. Your speedo reads high thus your milometer reads high thus your MPG is higher. Use your sat nav to work out your miles then use the pump to tell you how much fuel is in the car then work it out. Then panic when you realise it's nowhere near what you thought! Seriously I loved older Saab's but the newer ones bless em are not Saab's at all. It all started going wrong when they brought in the newer 900, ah hateful cars. There are still some good 9000 aero's about for not a lot of money.

Yeah , I admit its an Astra and does 17mpg, that is why after a few years running one I decided to buy another ...

Inbred go and watch the last 20 mins of tonights Top Gear to learn that the later Saabs were just that Saab. GM dumped them because they would not badge engineer their cars.

If you had driven an old SAAB 900 and compared It to a newer GM 900 they are a stellar shift difference. Yes they did change a few things but that was because the doner cars were so poor. They never could get the handling right on the later 900's even modding the suspension. The 2.3 turbo high pressure engines are superb but the chassis could never handle the power. Even Saab engineers couldn't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I'm lucky that i have had the pleasure of owning a real Saab, its a real shame that its come to this. Long live the T16!
