We will be in touch
Always had a sneaking itch to get to know some rush music
I know
time stands still
Spirit of the radio
Tom sawyer etc
What couple of albums should I start with?
I know there's a lot of flack coming so do your worst
Plum
l always liked 2112
must dig it out again
that's fantastic that you want to get into rush (am just a slight fan of theirs 😉
may i suggest you start with some of their 80's albums
in no particular order:-
1.signals
2.power windows
3.permanent waves
4.hold your fire
5.hemispheres
6.counterparts (one of their 90's albums)
if you like what you hear then have a listen to some of their classic prog rock opera stuff:-
1.2112
2.hemispheres
i would start with their 80's stuff if possible though as it's less (PROG ROCK 😉
oh and welcome to the fan club 😀
EDIT this absolutely rocks also 😀
They have changed so much over the years, there is a huge difference between their early rocky stuff and much later pop-rock.
My faves are:
Signals
Hold your Fire
Power Windows
Great band mind, been a fan for 20+ years!
i would start with Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves and then move on to the last couple of albums, both are excellent
Dead good band. Absolute beast of a tune
Moving Pictures is pretty good I think. My favourite is actually their self titled though I think. Not nearly as proggy.
Its all good, get Farewell to Kings and 2112 as their best early records and Hold Your Fire and Power Windows for the 80's stuff as a start.
A farewell to kings
2112 is still my favorite, then either Fly By Night, or Farewell to Kings. I pretty much stopped at that point. I remember buying both Hemispheres and Permanent Waves, but the joy had gone for me by then.
There's a good film chronicling their story:

when i were a lad 2112 and farewell to kings a bit a of early acdc to garnish and jobs done, had a Nad 3020 amp castle speakers and a linn sonn deck ( probably spelt wrong) Micheal Schenker group tour t shirt bullet belt skinny cords cowboy boots and shoulder length hair..WHY didn t i have a gurl friend?
30 years later still got the bullet belt!
It's the film that prompted my interest this afternoon
So I'm going for signals and power windows to start
I had grace under pressure on vinyl which is great on listening back to it now
Thanks all for your help
On a slight tangent , if you like a bit of rush try .the mars volta for a bit of modern prog .awsome on ipod on a long ride
Landcruiser on here is a big fan and introduced me to Rush. Good stuff. He made me laugh by describing the lead singer's voice as a mix between Jimmy Page and Donald Duck 😆
As for the Mars Volta , crazy shit, but very good .
First saw Rush live in 1980 and they were quite superb in Glasgow last year. Geddy struggles with some of the vocals these days but they put on an awsome show
They've been my favourite band for 36 years now, and I've taken some real stick for it. Not the trendiest group by any means but I love them.
Early Rush and later Rush are very different. Caress of Steel is my favourite of the early stuff, but I'm in a small minority. 2112 would be a better place to start.
Of the "middle" period, Moving Pictures is the standout classic album, although Grace Under Pressure has some great stuff too.
And of the later albums, Counterparts is my favourite. Vapor Trails is good but badly engineered; the sound is awful.
Try the live albums too. Live in Rio is superb, though the crowd noise is a bit too constant. The last live album is quite possibly the best of the bunch. Get some DVDs too; they put on a great show.
Snakes and Arrows is an amazing piece of work, but does take a bit of effort to get into.
The Rush Chronicles compilation might not be a bad way to start.
Then you will get a feel of the differences over time, and can concentrate on albums from the periods you prefer first.
EDIT: Geddy's voice is a" mix between a mix between Robert Plant and Donald Duck." In a good way of course.
My favourite band too, pretty much since I first hear them around 83. As already said, the stuff you would get into most probably depends on your taste as they have changed style quite a bit through the years and sucessfully absorbed a lot of new influences. That's one of the things that's kept them from getting stale.
My favourites are Permanent Waves and Grace Under Pressure maybe. Really hard to say, it's all so good in different ways.
This is very good though...
2112 was amazing for its time stands up well one but my vote would be snakes and arrows brilliant
Never really got into Rush, although I have Grace Under Pressure, which I used to like when I could play vinyl. If you like Geddy's voice, then you might like to check out Pavlov's Dog, an earlier band. Their best album was At The Sound Of The Bell, Pampered Menial wasn't as good, IMHO.
Wow, another Pavolv's Dog fan. 😀
I've genuinely never met anyone else who likes them.
Was given 'At the sound of the bell' years ago, wouldn't have heard of them myself otherwise.
Great album.
I've had a Rush thing going for about 12 months now. I'd start with Exit Stage Left, play it 'til you know every word, note and drum beat then start your collection of studio albums based on what you like from the live album. Just remember that they ain't no one-level pop band, the more you play 'em the more you notice new things.
