I know there is some awfully sweet stuff that is sold in clubs (cant remember what its called- Not Bacardi!) and mount Gay is too mellow for me.

Any recommendations?

What is the stuff they sell in clubs/bars? Captain Morgan? I asked for a double and they popped coke in. It was like a glass of sweeet sugar (cough)

Angostura 1919 is lovely, available from Oddbins.

If not, I love Mauritian stuff, Green Island or Green Island Spiced Gold.

Hey! Bacardi 8 is superb!

I should know by now that a forum full of weirdo's that want to ride a shit bike because its not so common would also want to drink a Rum in similar style.

Try a bottle of Brants old felch juice, it sounds right up your alley

White Overproof - rocket fuel for hardened islanders only 😉

sod captain morgan.

angoustora 7 year old or the 1919 mentioned above or 'english harbour'
available in waitrose about £20 a bottle. if you don't like either i will buy the bottle off you, i promise you will like it.
sailor jerry is o.k as is ODV demerara, better than the big brand stuff like woods/lambs captain morgan but not as good as the ones above.

As a hardened islander I would say that Overproof Rum is for amateurs. Real men drink Forres Park Puncheon Rum from Trinidad and Tobago.

Personally I am a big fan of Demerara rum, such as El Dorado, the more common OVD is not in the same league. This may be due to spending way too much time in Guyana though 😉

75%! I've spent some time in Tobago and the local soaks drink the white stuff out of unmarked bottles that look like milk bottles. It doesn't help their driving much!

Vat19 and Fernandes are also nice ones. I'll have to try the Demerara.

Check it out, mahn.

Morrison's do Appleton Special for about £13 a bottle. A lovely golden Jamaican rum for the money.

Bugger. Too much of the cane juice before trying to post that!
The site's an education though.
What you need is an online straw to make the virtual actual!

Now, there's an idea ripe for invention....

Havana Club is good, very mellow and even better on cold days - also sold at Waitrose.

Pusser's Naval Rum. The offical rum of the Royal Navy and is arguably the best rum ever.

Failing that, Bunderberg.

Actually, it depends what you wanna do with it.
Mix it? On the rocks? Sip by a bonfire on a beach?
There's a rum for every eventuality.
Young rum. Aged rum. White, gold or dark rum.

bastard. I really fancy a drink now.

2nd Havana Club, reasonable price, great to mix or drink neat.

Still have half a bottle of home grown shanty town rum from our Honeymoon 12 years ago from St Lucia, tastes rank 😉

If you have an extra few spare quid in your pocket try Zacapa from Guatemala.

Zacapa

or El Dorado by Demarera from Guyana

Demarera

Morgans Spice and Sailor Jerrys are the usual 'sweet' spiced rums on offer in bars. IMO they are best suppedon there own without mixer.

Havanna Club rum is available as a 1 year (clear) 3 year (amber) and 7 year (dark) - these are my favourites with the the 3 year been the best. Its also proper Cuban rum (unlike the big pretender bacardi)

Use the one year to make Mojito, the 3 year for Cuba Libre and the 7 year to warm your cockles from the hip flask on a night ride.

I've got 3 year and 7 year Havanna Club in the cabinet
as above - 3 for mixing, 7 for supping

I brought some Ron Barcelao gran reserva back from Spain the other year, that had a beautiful mellow flavour - like a good single malt but sweeter.

Rum doesn't get much better than this... who has been watching Masterchef? 🙄

Bought some more Mount Gay (sorry the name gets me everytime) and a bottle of standard Havana Club as Sainsburys dont really stock a great deal. Will visit a couple of local indie wine shops this weekend as well. Thank you very much! 🙂

Sailor Jerry is very flavourful. You get caramel, vanilla, and all kinds of tastes in it.

Bacardi 151 will take your head off. Danger!

Apart from the connotations 🙄 I've probably committed a Rum-cardinal sin haven't I?
