Onehundred - saw that stall several times and i never saw the Scots hand actually touch the ball, came close but his hand went over the top as the ball came back underneath him. I would have said the same had it been the other way around with an English player going for it. The attacking player doesn't get control on the ball and the defending player gets lucky as the ball stalls/bounces back into his chest allowing him to ground it. The TMO was correct in saying no try as the the attacking player did not have control or downward pressure at any time.
Yep you could also argue they were both vying for the ball.
I don't think that would be a valid argument. Vying for a 50/50 ball is one thing, climbing up someones back (who is clearly closer to the ball) is quite another. Even if he had grounded it, it should have been an english penalty.
Some awesome displays probably the best by the two southern african players (one on each side rich).
Sorry, the point I was trying to make is that the article has a blatant English bias, Denton was head and shoulders above any other player on the park, so the journalist was undermining that in the only way he could. No mention at all made of nationality in the other 30 individual reviews!
If it had been the other way round (or indeed any team bar the one i'm supporting) i'd have thought it unlucky that the try wasn't given. There is a shot looking side on to the posts where the hand does appear to go over the ball but the "stop" to the ball's rotation would indicate that contact has been made. (anyway we're not going to be awarded it now and overall played the wrong game to get a win(actually probably just the wrong starting 10)).
Rich, aye sorry fella, does on inspection look a bit odd.
Rich penny. Comments are different in paper version with no mention of nationality in one I am reading. Plus rankings split between Gavin Mairs (Scottish?) and Ackford. Sure those aren't Mair's comments? And Denton got the highest score of anyone. Of course he had 2 points deducted for the offence of the 80s mullet. Apart from that he was best player on both sides.
RFU rules. What is not clear?Grounding happens when the ball is on the ground and The player's hand is on the ball.
Ooo was about to walk away but IRB do say:
22.1 GROUNDING THE BALL
There are two ways a player can ground the ball:
(a) Player touches the ground with the ball. A player grounds the ball by holding the ball and touching the ground with it, in in-goal. ‘Holding’ means holding in the hand or hands, or in the arm or arms. No downward pressure is required.
(b) Player presses down on the ball. A player grounds the ball when it is on the ground in the in-goal and the player presses down on it with a hand or hands, arm or arms, or the front of the player’s body from waist to neck inclusive.

Today's match should be better.
It will be interesting to see how Wales plan of playing eight back-row forwards, and doing away with the notion of "backs", plays out.
If anyone can remember a bigger line-up from 9-15, I'd be interested to hear, I can't. D'arcy and Mcfadden will have sore heads tonight.
Mike Phillips Height 1.91 m (6' 3") Weight 100 kg (15 st 10 lb)
Rhys Priestland Height 1.83 m (6' 0") Weight 87 kg (13 st 9 lb)
George North Height 1.93 m (6' 4") Weight 104 kg (16 st 5 lb)
Jamie Roberts Height 1.93 m (6' 4") Weight 110 kg (17 st 4 lb)
Jonathan Davies Height 1.85 m (6' 1") Weight 103 kg (16 st 3 lb)
Alex Cuthbert Height 1.98 m (6' 6") Weight 104 kg (16 st 5 lb)
Leigh Halfpenny Height 1.78 m (5' 10") Weight 83 kg (13 st 1 lb)
double post
Bloody heck there's some big backs.
I teach (several) U18 Scotland squad players and one who plays at 6 and is only 17 weighs in at 90kgs and SRU want him to put on another 20kgs. He and his brother will make a fair pairing if they make it to international level.

Given the extent of hot air and false bravado eminating from Edinburgh these days, it was somewhat fitting that England should not only win, but win ugly. Made it all the more pleasurable!Sad to listen to the usual bad sportsmanship of the M'field crowd with the heckling of kickers (and Robinson's petulance) and even sadder that the English supporters ended up following suit.
I was at the game and saw it differently. It all started with the singing of swing low during Flower of Scotland.
.This thread has been really enjoyable so far, with none of the bile that the WC had, if you are going to start spouting rubbish/trying to troll like the above, why don't you go elsewhere?
Back to the rugby; I didn't think it was a try,not enough contact. But I don't think it was the advantage over either. That close at that level you assume three points is a given;a kick, despite popular opinion, does not mean advantage over.
Tend to agree with you there Duckman. Should have been a pop for three points.
edit : The oficials did take an age to review it, but they know the rules and how to apply them, and needed to be sure. However, it then seemed like the Ref had forgotten he'd had his arm up, it had been that long ago.
Fair points duckman, but two wrongs don't make a right.
Can we leave the tribal slagging now please? Every international rugby thread seems to degenerate.
Yup wrecker, have edited in light of how this one has been so far. Now,advice needed..having rolled in at Midnight last night, how do I get a pass to head to the pub for the battle of the back rows? 😀
Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.....
Wrecker speaks the truth. I've fixed 'er indoors mtb, cleaned and oiled her roadie and there is a slow cooking stew in the oven and i'm about to walk the dog.
I reckon a note to the effect that i'm in the pub should be taken in the spirit it was meant.
Pissed off that the Wales Ireland match is on 5 live extra, just typical of the media bias towards england of the BBC.

POSTED 20 SECONDS AGO # REPORT-POST
Pffft...I went out at 8am yesterday, left her stuck in on a foul day with our two boys. Came in at midnight pissed, crashed around the house, switched the light on and off while singing D.I.S.C.O then stripped naked, enquired about a spot of lurve. Then (unloved) fell fast asleep while proceeding to fart and snore, apparently giggling in my sleep at especially loud/smelly issues of gas. Woke up this morning and enquired about chances of bacon rolls....Is that roughly the same?
Two chances fella. Hee and Haw.
(as we say north of the border)

Why are you annoyed it is still on the radio? Lets be honest Chelsea United will attract a far bigger audience, correct comercial decision.
.Is that roughly the same?
Near enough. Got a dog?
Tails I am just a chippy one eyed sheep shagger, 6 nations is once a year wendyball seems to be on all the time. Happily admit Man U Chelsea will attract more listeners but the beeb isn't a commercial broadcaster.
Duck man, hardly a troll. Shame any supporters behave badly including the English (hence my comments) but M'field stands out among the home nations as being the stadium where kickers are heckled. Hope all RU stamp it out before we become like football.
Singing swing low should be frowned on at any time. Nowt to do with England and so dull.
Anyway match of the weekend now!
Glad that Lancaster said he was going to enjoy the night. Much better than the endless flagellation that came with the dire Correy/Robinson era.
Afew thoughts on the england performance- whilst yes it was a dull game it was the 1st time england has won at murrayfield for 8 years according to the comentry team which is no bad thing, england scored a try also a good thing they also gave away very few penalties showing good disapline from a young and inexperienced team
Overall I felt they showed promise as the basis of a future team and i for one am glad to see the back of what the england team was becoming ie a collection of players who thought they were bigger than the team and who thought it was ok to behave like footballers.
Well done england I say now lets show the doubters up with great games against real opponents!!
yes I know my spellings shite

it has it's place I think, before the match it seems appropriate - there's times when it has been sung when I've been at Twickenham and it has made my eyes itch...
if only more people knew the words to Jerusalem
.
Wales for the win I think.
Wales 18 - Ireland 13
Pissed off that the Wales Ireland match is on 5 live extra, just typical of the media bias towards england of the BBC
Confused. The match is live on BBC1 and also on Radio 5. How is that media bias towards England ? Or is the match not on TV in Wales ?
I havent got a telly and have to go collect someone in the car so cant hear it, just whining really 😳
Lets hope this will be a better game. I think if Ireland can contain the Welsh backs we will win by 5.
Also a thought to Keith Earls and his family, the illness of a child puts this in perspective.
Well that's just disproven the theory that all Welshmen can sing! 😛
On the Laidlaw "try"
if the ref had asked "any reason not to award the try" then a try would be given - but as he asked " try yes or no" there was enough doubt not to award it. Marginal but the right decision in the end 🙁 They had had a try scoring opportunity so advantage over - again Harsh / marginal but maybe right
Adam jones is the most welsh looking person in the world!
nah, he's a bit too well kept for a welshman
General on the Scots / England game - much as I thought once Parks was selected. Scots pack not as dominant as I hoped but still took a lineout ball and disrupted a few more and shaded the breakdown but a good performance from the Engladn pack I thought. Its a measure of how good the scots pack were how much ball the scots had and how unlikely a Engladn try looked.
Parks as predicted kicked the ball for Foden to counter, shovelled on rubbish causing the team to go back and put them in the position that led to the charge down and try. missed an important touch from a penalty, gave the momentum to England and allowed them to settle and showed why he must never get another Scotland shirt. Him Or "chainsaw" Laney for the worst antipodean to get a Scots jumper! How much better did Scotland look with Laidlaw on?
Too much anxiety from teh Scotland attack leading to the fumbles. I felt sorry for Lee in particular - no decent ball came his way.
Surely both sides can only get better? I hope for rugbys sake.
Bowe should be in the bin
Funny how bias affects judgement isn't it?
If the ref continues his protection of the 9 phillips will really make hay
Where's the problem?
Wales too much for Ireland so far.
No problem with that at all just an observation
I was talking about the ref questioning the try... 😀
Tell Halfp to jump! What a take!
have Ireland got glitter in their shirts?
Phillips lucky to be on the filed.
Very Lucky - clear deliberate block, shoulder charge not tackle
Did ogara just call him a ****?
