Looking for something half car-width, so that I can still carry 2 bikes on top. Have Thule bike racks, which work, so would be twempted again, but their website is awful.. e.g. quotes boxes as being available in 3 sizes, but specs only quote one set of dimensions. Any suggestions or owner experiences gratefully received

I got a load of Thule stuff from roofbox.co.uk, who were very helpful.

I'd second roofbox.co.uk. I went for a ski box. Long and thin so can get three bikes on at a squeeze too. Plenty of space and narrow enough for me to fit through the loft hatch for when I'm not using it.

+1 for roofbox.co.uk We got the Kamei 450, which on a people carrier allows space for two bikes alongside. Solid reliable box - would buy the same again.

I got a kamei from toolbox. All I would say is that if you get a wide box and a tall car, your probably better with a box that opens either side as fixing to the roof bars can become very hard.
