Fair play to him?  Balderdash.  He and his party have spent the last decade stoking the fires or extremism.  He needs to boot all the racists, homophobes and islamophobes out of the party.  There is one key factor in the rise of extremeism in the UK - tory party policy and public pronouncements

The man is a gross hypocrite

To me, sunak's inane wittering showed a lack of clear thinking and piss poor communication skills.

What, lil rish!, was the message?

With the tone of that speech I was waiting for the ‘We are protecting democracy by declaring Marshall law’ line.

Agree with this. Felt genuinely sick listening to it. Democracy is under threat from imaginary forces so we must crack down on uour freedoms to protect you.

Straight out of 1930s Germany.

The voters of Rochdale have exercised their democratic right to elect Galloway, for whatever reason. That doesn't threaten democracy, and the people saying it does would be better off looking at WHY they voted for him, and for an indy candidate in second place.

Probably the most doublespeak statement from a UK politician of all time. Just when you think we're at the bottom, the Cons keep on digging.

Indeed. But self awareness is very out of fashion this week.

Sunak doesn't mind a bit of extremism, it just has to be the right government approved extremism.

am no fan of Sunak, but still think it was right for him to denounce extremism on all sides

obviously his own party have done nothing but stoke division for the past 8 years and the hypocrisy is off the scale

anyway with every single Tory retweeting Sunak's "Powerful" speech for the first time im thinking they might actually be going for a May election

Bonkers beyond belief with such a huge gap in the polls

Straight out of 1930s Germany.

Was having this exact conversation with my History teacher wife this evening.

So much of what comes out of the Tories right now smacks of the 1930s playbook. Not being alarmist and saying that's where we're actually heading, but the tactics being used to stir up mistrust of the 'other' and create divisions within society are worryingly similar.

Both of Sunak's recent declarations stink of wanting to use the police and the law as a (party) political weapon.

When the Tory Party officially churns out extremist hate-filled shite like this:

https://www.suellabraverman.co.uk/news/islamists-are-bullying-britain-submission

It comes as no great surprise that the good people of Rochdale didn't rush out to vote Conservative yesterday.

I don't believe for a moment that the Rochdale by-election result came as any sort of shock to Rishi Sunak.

But I can see from his little speech outside Number 10 that he intends to exploit the result to whip up even greater fear of "Islamists" taking control of the country.

Sunak has an unavoidable general election coming up soon, he is both desperate and a Tory, that was obvious from his Downing Street speech this afternoon - he wants to scare people into voting Tory.

Sunak was right about one thing this afternoon - there is a problem with division and hate in our society. Him and his party are indisputably part of the problem - they have contributed so much in that respect.

Some nice barbs at Sunak in this. Leaving the interviewee and the surrounding subjects aside.

"you're talking to him as if he was god. We're talking about little Rishi Sunak in the fag end of his prime ministership"

"don't keep telling me about the prime minister as if he was Moses"

The whole interview was hilarious. Enjoy this segment.

I didn't find it funny. I said about a week ago that Galloway's ego would be insufferable if he won Rochdale. The smug patronising contempt he treats that Sky reporter confirms my worse fears.

And of course with the laughing female fans in the background to egg on Gorgeous George.

I said this to specifically try and keep the lid on this can of worms. Perhaps I shouldn't have posted it.

Just barbs at someone I don't like, doesn't matter who's making them.

Fairy nuff. But it made me uncomfortable to see him ridiculing the Sky reporter. I reckon Galloway has sufficient talent to make his point forcefully without showing that level of contempt to the person who is interviewing him.

It didn't make pleasant viewing for me.

galloway has no redeeming features - at all.

He is objectionable and his comments/views have no relevance.

The voters of Rochdale will soon find out how empty his words are - irrespective of his grandiloquence.

He is a self-serving and egotistical money grabber.

Rochdale, to him, is nothing more than an opportunity.

galloway is so far up his own arse that he sees no need to be polite/pleasant to or considerate of others.

Truck him and his followers.

This government is creeping towards not calling one at all.

However it's not going to be May. As late as possible if they play ball.

Mortgage approvals up - house market starting to move and interests rates pivot soon. This is the only bit of 'good' news they can hope for

That's my guess anyway.

I suspect a lot of Germans in the 1930s thought it wasn't where things were heading either.

Thats the worry

This government is creeping towards not calling one at all.

It feels that way. Hopefully we’re paranoid. But “saving democracy” by “delaying” an election using emergency means does feel like the destination with recent announcements. Don’t want to believe it… but that could just be British exceptionalism at play. Put it this way, there are USA backed groups that have had people fully embedded in government under a string of different Tory PMs, including Sunak, who wouldn’t blink at Trump having more than two terms in office over there… why wouldn’t they be pushing for similar “games” to maintain influence back here?

failing Rwanda scheme that Tories desperately tried to hide

Which is presumably why Rishi Sunak is shifting from weirdly treating the deportation of refugees to Rwanda as the most important issue facing the UK, to now staging emergency announcements outside Number 10 about the threat to the country from "Islamists".

If he's clever he will put Starmer on the spot by declaring the need to introduce emergency legislation to tackle the threat of mob rule from Israel-hating Islamists on our streets.

Obviously there isn't a problem and the demonstrations expressing opposition to the slaughter currently occurring in occupied Palestine are perfectly peaceful and family friendly affairs. In fact the half a dozen or so arrests that inevitably occurs when hundreds of thousands demonstrate is apparently less than the rate of arrests at Glastonbury.

But the Tory press has been pushing the Braverman "hate marches" narrative for months and no doubt some people believe that they represent mob rule.

If Starmers clever, he will point out that legislation already exists, and have a long list of quotes from Tories to demonstrate who has been stoking the fires.

Of all the areas to start a fight with Starmer, the former DPP, I'd think the application of existing laws and legislation probably isn't the wisest one.

Given Sunaks clueless political instincts I fully expect him to choose that hill to die on.

What was the point of Sunak's rantette yesterday?

He told us what he was cheesed off about but gave no statement on how he plans to deal with it.

This is the tenure of piss and wind.

Talking about money and the economy….

But the Rwanda scheme is about putting people off coming to UK rather than the numbers it is sending but as we know those desperate people who are even aware of the scheme will take their 1% chance of being one of the people sent to Rwanda and still risk it anyway.

Hmm £580m for 300 people.

May as well throw them a million quid and send them to Portugal/Spain to sort out a house and golden visa 🙂

IMHO it’s all a bit worrying the speed the new rhetoric has moved.

He’s good at doing that.

However, I’ve just heard on the news that he intends to fix it all by…

*checks notes*

… changing the legal definition of what constitutes extremism.

Presumably it’s ‘anything I don’t like’ then?

He really is absolutely useless, isn’t he? He thinks he’s going to just scrawl something on the back of a fag packet and everyone’s just going to nod that through parliament, are they?

I’m guessing we can file that alongside the 40 new hospitals and flights to Rwanda in the ‘things that are never going to happen’ folder

Committing genocide: Would you like to buy some weapons?

Protesting against genocide: Extremist! Down with your protests!

Being an MP and inciting hatred: If I absolutely have to I'll remove the whip from you although actually I agree with everything you said.

Protesting against inciting hatred: How dare you infringe on our great freedom of speech! Down with your protests. You nasty little extremist!

He doesn't have the legislative time to do anything before the election now, regardless of what date he calls it for.

So file this under 'damage-limitation-gammon-luring' before polls open.

Clearly Sunak is concerned about attacks on MPs by extremists. Such as the attack on George Galloway which left him with scars that he now covers with a hat.
