Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced today that restrictions preventing the development of land earmarked for the now-scrapped section of HS2 have been lifted.
The Cabinet Minister officially ended safeguarding for Phase 2a between the West Midlands and Crewe, meaning land on the route can be developed in a way that would conflict with building the high speed railway.
In October last year, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak axed plans to extend HS2 to Manchester, to save money which could be spent on other local transport schemes. At the time, the Department for Transport said safeguarding would be lifted “at the earliest opportunity”.
Railway consultant William Barter described the decision as “ludicrous” and an act of “spite”, saying it would make it harder for a future government to reverse the decision not to extend the railway.

What's annoying is that Labour could put the brakes on this by announcing that one of its first acts in government would be to revisit the viability of HS2, and, if they decide it's worth reviving, they would be legislating to take back any land sold off in the interim below market rates so the project could go ahead.
Doesn't commit them to anything, but developers aren't going to be buying parcels of land that they could make a loss on almost immediately.
I wonder who'd buy the land? I'd be wary of buying it to develop on, since you'd end up sinking money into planning that might be wasted if it's bought back. On the other hand, if it's going to be bought back you might want to speculate on it.

This is so clueless as to be absurd.
1) tax cuts are never ever funded. It simply means less money is deleted from the non- government sector. So more money in your pocket theoretically.
2) he's saying you can cut tax through inherent growth. Well there's no growth currently and second *debt* can't really fall and have a tax cut at the same time, all things being equal, unless they choose not to issue bonds, which given the weak resolve of modern democratic governments over markets is unlikely.
3) future generations never pay government debt down. It's not possible for the system to work that way.
Either way pre-G.E tax cuts are probably on their way. (We knew they would come back to this eventually.)

All they need to do is put a clause in the sale contract saying if it is compulsory purchased withing X years then try are guaranteed to get their purchase price plus Y percent increase per year of ownership. That will get everyone snapping them up and put a big complication in getting it all back

Given the sort of person interested in it then the obvious counter would be for Labour to say "any purchase of land will come with a free detailed tax inspection".
I see Sunak is claiming this is the "will of the people". Think it is only fair therefore for all MPs and Lord to support it.
