Coffey is absolutely embarrassing.

Surely someone called her out on this (respectfully obvs!) in the house? If not, why not?

The whole cabinet has been stuffed with absolute dimwits for years. Coffey is just the latest to show her ignorance

Rishi is giving a press conference shortly. I suppose it'll be the usual pointless exercise, where he says absolutely nothing. I'm guessing this will be 'We're stopping the boats' and taking credit for the fall in boat crossings that is entirely down to the weather

She gets 84K a year plus about 200K in expenses. So, a cool quarter mill for that. Does that help you decide?

And a vote on whether to send refugees to a country she doesn't even know the capital of. Yes, all in all, I think it's seething anger I'm feeling right now, but that's been largely the same since 2016.

*sigh*

As predicted, he said absolutely nothing. He's like a walking vacuum

He made reference to the Lords 'frustrating the will of the people' and 'Take Back Control' within the first minute. FFS! They're just going full Brexit/culture war again, aren't they? Can't see it working this time around, mind. It is literally all they've got left

So the UK PM has just announced on live radio that he will breach happily International Law.

What have we become?

frustrating the will of the people

Guess he's not seen this morning's polls then. Or noted the fact that he couldn't even get endorsed as PM by his own membership.

If he's interested in 'the will of the people', perhaps he should seek an electoral mandate of some kind?

And that he will also change legislation to force civil servants to break international law.

Its very exciting to have a new 3 word slogan though: Start The Flights. Appearing on a lectern soon

All bluster and no balls. They all get in line when their paychecks and expenses are on the line.

For the sake of balance, so are the so-called moderates in the Tory party.

They all said that the Rwanda bill goes too far and that they can't endorse breaking international law, then when required to do so, they all march through the lobby and vote for the bill that goes too far and that endorses breaking international law

The whole lot of them are spineless ****s completely unprepared to do anything that might jeopardise their own cushy lifestyles.

Sunak could propose getting Royal Navy submarines to start torpedoing migrant boats in the channel and when it came to the vote they'd all ultimately endorse it

Genuinely considering chucking my 20 years in the bin if that comes in. I'm lucky, I've only got 12 years to retirement and can look elsewhere in the meantime. Most civil servants can't afford to have principles.

HIghly7 unlikely - It would go to the courts and they would strike it down.  You cannot order someone to break the law.  the unions will protect the staff

That is actually all that Sunak wants to achieve now:

'Look at our lovely Rwanda policy, defeated by the woke blob of lefty judges, civil servants and unions!'

It's just setting up an electoral attack-line.

While Lil Rishi was making his bizarre and pointless speech, Transport Secretary Mark Harper was busy salting the earth and lifting the restrictions on the use of land purchased for HS2, no doubt that now reclassified it can be flogged off on the cheap to their mates

Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced today that restrictions preventing the development of land earmarked for the now-scrapped section of HS2 have been lifted.

The Cabinet Minister officially ended safeguarding for Phase 2a between the West Midlands and Crewe, meaning land on the route can be developed in a way that would conflict with building the high speed railway.

In October last year, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak axed plans to extend HS2 to Manchester, to save money which could be spent on other local transport schemes. At the time, the Department for Transport said safeguarding would be lifted “at the earliest opportunity”.

Railway consultant William Barter described the decision as “ludicrous” and an act of “spite”, saying it would make it harder for a future government to reverse the decision not to extend the railway.

What's annoying is that Labour could put the brakes on this by announcing that one of its first acts in government would be to revisit the viability of HS2, and, if they decide it's worth reviving, they would be legislating to take back any land sold off in the interim below market rates so the project could go ahead.

Doesn't commit them to anything, but developers aren't going to be buying parcels of land that they could make a loss on almost immediately.

I wonder who'd buy the land?  I'd be wary of buying it to develop on, since you'd end up sinking money into planning that might be wasted if it's bought back.  On the other hand, if it's going to be bought back you might want to speculate on it.

Stupid Hunt:

Asked whether it was irresponsible to cut taxes when debt as a share of national income was close to 100%, Hunt said: “It depends on how you fund the tax cuts. If you fund them by a significant increase in borrowing then you are just sending the bill to future generations.

“If it is through inherent growth in the economy – and you can still see debt falling over a five-year period – it can be very pro-growth.”

This is so clueless as to be absurd.

1) tax cuts are never ever funded. It simply means less money is deleted from the non- government sector. So more money in your pocket theoretically.

2) he's saying you can cut tax through inherent growth. Well there's no growth currently and second *debt*  can't really fall and have a tax cut at the same time, all things being equal, unless they choose not to issue bonds, which given the weak resolve of modern democratic governments over markets is unlikely.

3) future generations never pay government debt down. It's not possible for the system to work that way.

Either way pre-G.E tax cuts are probably on their way. (We knew they would come back to this eventually.)

All they need to do is put a clause in the sale contract saying if it is compulsory purchased withing X years then try are guaranteed to get their purchase price plus Y percent increase per year of ownership. That will get everyone snapping them up and put a big complication in getting it all back

Given the sort of person interested in it then the obvious counter would be for Labour to say "any purchase of land will come with a free detailed tax inspection".
I see Sunak is claiming this is the "will of the people". Think it is only fair therefore for all MPs and Lord to support it.
Of course to double check bearing in mind he was the third best will of the tory membership let alone the people we should have a GE to confirm.

Gonna be trouble in the lords over the Rwanda bill<br /><br />

Ruth Davidson: Rwanda deportation flights are 'probably never going to happen'<br />Speaking to the BBC, the former Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson has said there “are dogs in the street that know” deportation flights are “probably never going to happen”.

She told the broadcaster:

<br />Let’s have a debate about immigration, absolutely. Every sovereign nation should be in charge of who comes in; not everybody has a right to go to every country in the world – I completely get all of that.

But where is the balance in this, rather than some of the language that is being used, some of the knots that people are getting into?

And this thing about putting people on planes to Rwanda. I mean, there are dogs in the street that know that, one, it is probably never going to happen. And two, if it does, it is going to be a number so small that it makes very little difference to the bottom line.<br />Davidson is in the House of Lords, where both the treaty with Rwanda and the safety of Rwanda bill will need to make progress in the next couple of weeks before Rishi Sunak can make another attempt at getting his deportation policy off the ground.

I'm not always a fan, but Polly Toynbee is probably bang on in this mornings Guardian

Sunak is praying for the Lords to block the Rwanda bill – so he can blame the left

This whole thing was never meant to actually work. Its just some dog whistle, culture war nonsense to try and win voters back from Reform. It'd probably the best thing for the Lords to just wave it through and say 'crack on then'

Then instead of the tens of thousands of brown people that Reform-voting, racist dimwits imagine being herded into the back of huge transport aircraft to be packed off to Africa (Suellas Dream?), when a half-empty 737 takes off and Rishi states 'job done', lets see how they react to that?

Rishi is presently trying to pretend he cares what happens in Port Talbot when they close the blast furnaces

He genuinely sounds really sincere in his concern. Honest. Like he even knows where Port Talbot is?

A journalist on Five Live is presently pointing out that the continuation of UK steelmaking was supposedly one of these 'Brexit Dividends' we were all going to be enjoying

That Ian Dunt article is superb. His conclusion absolutely nails Sunak and everythign he represents, such as it is...

He's an empty shell of a man, presenting a package of vacuities, without moral substance to sustain him or meaning to motivate him. And if you watch him closely, you can see it all deflating, slowly but surely, into the nothingness which he truly represents.

1 - since when was UK industrial policy anything to do with the Welsh Govt

2 - it's Westminster that is paying Tata £500m to move to electric furnaces

3 - what makes you believe otherwise?
