i've got 2 butternut squash that have been growing in containers but I can't see them ripening outside now.
Can I just stick them on sunlit window sill to finish them off?

I have 4 - they're getting there, but then so is winter ...

We eat them un-ripe - but they won't store if not fully ripened. I don't think they'll ripen off the plant.
