So I have built a Revit model of the building you see here. On the most part its come together fine but Im really struggling with the roof. Just so you know Im not architectural but a mechanical/electrical engineer and we like to work in Revit where we can but the architect on this project wont release their Revit model as there is no collaborative working agreement in place! so I decided to build my own.

Ive built a roof that looks ok externally using lots of separate roofs joined with a flat roof in the middle but several sections dont really work plus the roofs all project down into the bedrooms on the top floor so there must be a better way of doing this. I had a play with roofs using slope arrows so I could get a longer projection on one side and a short drop the other but I kept getting "could not make roof" errors and it didnt like some of the complex angles or profiles. Im wondering if I need to use a combination of slope arrows and the manual manipulation tool....or even going back to my original set up and creating shaft openings just below the roof to cut away all of the bits that project into the rooms below...or is there a much simpler way of creating this? Any advise or help much appreciated, I tried the cad forums but never really got any replies?

Shame Architect is not releasing their model to you seeing that revit/ BIM is all about information sharing. I assume you won't be releasing yours to them either! A little odd for a design team to be both using Revit but not sharing models, seem to negate some of the main benefits of using it. Impressed you have spent the time taking the model that far yourselves though.

It's a little hard to understand your exact problem and what you are trying to do without some sections or better views.

One question though, as the M&E consultant, how much does it matter if the architectural model isn't perfect on your drawings? The roofs aren't going to be built from your drawings.

Thing is I will need to produce some room elevations from our model, plus deal with the services co-ordination so I could do with having the second floor rooms correct (without roofs cutting through them) also there are PV panels on the roof so co-ordination would be good here.

Its not the first time an architect wouldn't release their model to us. The Bim managers get quite precious about it and seem to think the only way to release it would be for us to work on their central model which obviously comes with risk if you are not familiar with collaborative working. I only want a detached file from them.

So are they not willing to release anything be it an export form their model or even 2d exports of the areas you need? We've had projects where structural of Mechanical guys aren't using Revit and we've combined our model sections with 2d dwg overlays of their sections - obviously not ideal!

They are issuing 2D plans/ sections and elevations from the model and they will do 3D images of areas etc but this only helps so much. For me its far easier to use the model and use Revits data base and scheduling elements, plus changes are captured across the project opposed to me having to edit a whole raft of 2D plans.

anyway...im still no better on the roof..I have gone back to the many individual roof sections approach and tried to cut roof openings in the bits that protrude into the rooms and this kind of works but is so time consuming.

See architects section of the typical roof.

Its the roof detail on the left im struggling with.

Is there even a name for these style of roofs?
