If I have an excel sheet like:

1.eps - filename1.eps
50.eps - filename1.eps
3453.eps - filename1.eps
234.eps - filename1.eps
654.eps - filename1.eps
33.eps - filename2.eps
655.eps - filename2.eps
345.eps - filename3.eps
914.eps - filename4.eps
4567.eps - filename4.eps

I have the named files collated, and I want to rename them as the numbers automatically(to save me a shedload of pissing about.).

Anybody know how?

put a new column on the sheet with a 'formula' that results in the rename command, then paste that column into the command window

yep, create a calc that that says "ren " A1 " " A2 (so first line should be should turn out as "ren 1.eps filename1.eps", then export it as a comma separated file (CSV) and rename it a a *.bat file. Run it.

make sure you've got the paths correct or nowt will happen

cool cheers all, sounds just the ticket, quick google seems to show it's easy enough . Will this create new files? A I have one instance of filename1.eps and want that to be renamed as multiple files?

No. if you want to rename a file as multiple copies treate a bat file that basically says "copy 1.eps new1.eps" changing the destination name each time.

I would advise copying the original directory before you do anything as once you start a bat file running there's not much you can do!

Unless I'm missing something,

You could swap those two columns over, add a first column that says 'copy' in every cell, then C&P the lot into Notepad and save it with a .bat extension. No calculations needed. That'd give you:

copy filename1.eps 1.eps
copy filename1.eps 50.eps
copy filename1.eps 3453.eps
...

Unless I've misunderstood what you're trying to do?

I would advise copying the original directory before you do anything as once you start a bat file running there's not much you can do!

Sage advice.

Excel's less obvious usefulness - text processing.

Is this just a requirement to change the name of the "file" in an excel list or is it a registry change (in explorer) you need?
