I have a removable hard-drive which is dead or almost. It sounds like its spins up ok, but there are ominous clicks. The PC loads the drivers for the disk ok, but the PC doesn't show it as a removable drive. I really need to data off it, is there somewhere I can send it away for the data to be salvaged? Any other ideas?
Professional data recovery is usually prohibitively expensive. How badly do you need the data?
You could try taking the disk out of the caddy (it's just a regular hard drive inside) and fitting it directly into a PC, but from the sounds of things it's the drive itself that's failed.
Moral of this story is, disks fail and storage is cheaper than recovery, make backups.
Are you sure it's getting enough power? My external hard drives make a worrying death rattle sound when plugged into a source with insufficient grunt.
Try connecting through a powered USB hub.
Double post
thanks all. yes have removed from caddy and used another powered caddy as a test. Again, PC doesn't show the external drive. Think it's not looking good.
