So the OH has just been given a job at a company in Yeovil. We will be relocating from Maidstone, Kent this summer as a result.

We have been looking at places to buy to the west of Yeovil, preferably within a 45 minute commute of there. Are there any areas to avoid or look at specifically?

We are happy to live centrally as areas along the coast we have seen so far have the higher price tags.

Sherborne. An abbey, two castles, a delightful high street with independent shops. And Waitrose.

In laws are down the road in West Chinnock, lots of small nice villages down that way, Chard, but a few seem to be quite small, I.e no shops one pub if you're lucky. We go into Yeovil occasionally when we're down there, always strikes me as a bit of a dump tbh. FiL works at RNAS and drives in commute doesn't seem to be to bad

could make it nicer or less nice depending if you need to drive through it.

Oo! Oo! Pick me!
Currently writing this from an office in Yeovil, and I've been in the area for the last 20-odd years. Currently traffic at rush hour is sh1te, as the council are re-doing every major roundabout and Yeovil must be the largest town on the junction of two A roads w.o. a bypass.

I'll second Sherborne, but you will pay the Dorset premium and it is predominantly populated by either old f@rts or school kids. The Griffin school is a good state school there. If you want village life, Trent and Yetminster aren't bad. I'd also recommend South Petherton, mostly for the Brewer's Arms. It is also at the end of the line for a school bus to Colyton, an excellent 6th form college. For a more cosmopolitan life, Dorchester is good, but can be butting up against your 45min max.
I've moved to Ilminster in the last few years and it has a good, small town feel - allow 1/2hr to either Taunton or Yeovil.

Avoid Chard.

In Yeovil, call in to Rock and Road and join the Thursday night rides.

Sherbourne really is rather lovely, and Ilminster.. but I'd be trying to get as close to the coast as I could. What a lovely problem to have 🙂

Will definitely be calling in then for some night rides drlex. We will not know anyone down there, so any chance to find some more riding buddies would be great.

I'll have a little look at those villages for houses etc.

She is starting at Easter, but will be finding somewhere to stay until I move down proper in July time. I need to find a teaching job for September in the meantime.
