I'm hoping to have my cast removed this friday which will be 12 weeks less a day since i broke my leg. It's a spiral fracture in three places and was a low impact break.

So has anyone experience of rehabilitation in the first instance and regaining their fitness?

Thanks in advance

Can't say I have, but just wanted to wish you all the best with your rehab and I'm sure regaining your fitness won't be an issue once you've got strength back up in your leg.

Did tib and fib in 2006 a open fracture with a ex fix on. Took 18 weeks till that was removed a month to get back walking with a limp and another 3 months for full fitness.

This year proximal fibula fracture, I was told I'd sprained my knee so two weeks on crutches then I walked but extreme pain so was sent for a Mr scan and told I had a fracture, cast for 6 weeks, fracture boot for 4. Went back to work in June and it was sore and weak and I fell coming out of work, torn meniscus and partial tears to ligaments again. Had Arthroscopy August and back to work mid September. Still sore.

Everyone is different, take your time and if it hurts rest it and ice any swelling.

I'm a Orthopaedic RGN, still learning. But I see people who have tib and fib fractures and some recover very quick, some not so.

Unfortunately I do have experience of this rehab. I may not have been typical but it took me a year and six separate operations including a bone graft from my hip to heal the fractures.
It has left my injured leg about 3/4 of an inch shorter than the other and some knee problems where it was opened up to facilitate nailing the bones.
My rehab was five days a week in the gym . Two physio sessions per week most of which involved wobble boards , therabands and body weight exercises for six months
I have never recovered 100% strength in the injured leg. My accident was in 2001
Cycling has been without doubt the best rehab for me.In the past year or so I rediscovered my love of cycling and basically ditched my car. All of my residual knee problems have disappeared. If I miss a week or so of the bike then the niggles start again.

I had a Potts fracture (just above the ankle) tib & fib. Swimming was good, as I could exercise the muscles without impact - I could even do it before putting full weight on it was comfortable. I didn't have a bike then but I guess cycling would be good, just make sure you don't crash. The other thing I've found with rehab is the need to do specific exercises to ensure full movement and flexibility; as the muscle rebuilds it tightens up. (I have no medical qualifications other than as a patient).

I have the same injury about 15 years ago playing football.

In retrospect it was a pretty straightforward injury, with a clean break in the tib and spiral in the fib, but at the time it was tough. I think I was in full cast for 14 weeks total.

When I came out of cast I was walking with a stick for a couple of weeks until the strength came back. I was, however, out on the bike pretty much straight away, even when struggling to walk. With it being non-load bearing it was really useful for getting the strength back in the leg. IIRC, it took about a month before I could do any light jogging, and then another month or so before I was sprinting.

I broke my leg mid January and was playing football again for the start of the next season so say end of August.

The fitness is difficult to get back but it will come. My advice would be not to push yourself and try and do too much too soon. I foolishly tried too much and ended up with associated issues with my ankle as it has also weakened during the 3-4 months out of action.

Best of luck pal, hope it goes OK.
