Hi,
I've not got anything that'll run Windows 7 at the moment and fancied an upgrade to my desktop. Most of the bits are serviceable. Any good deals on CPU, motherboard and memory out there?

I'll be using it for general desktop-y stuff, maybe a bit of Vmware running Oracle inside it (don't need fantastic performance). Not much in the way of games.

Would it be just as cost-effective to buy a box as replace the main bits? Budget around £200 as our lottery syndicate won at work (could maybe increase that)!

Stu.

A 2nd hand base unit, you could get for under £200 and be a good spec

this will be your best bet all second hand

q6600 cpu
asus p5k motherboard
2x 2gb ddr2 sticks of ram ocz or crucial probably

ebay or overclockers.co.uk

chip should be around 60-75
board about 50 - 75 depending on the p5k model and features
ram sadly will be around 50/60 also as its expensive now getting old ram

will suit you fine for a good few years no worries

Try Novatech for motherboard bundles, and Crucial for memory.

Be warned though; I went to just buy some more memory or something, ended up with new PSU, motherboard, processor, pretty processor fan, graphics card and a really smart 'hi-fi' style case as well. IE, a whole new machine! I think the only bit I had already was a HD and a DVD drive! Mind you, the lot only cost me about £400 or so, can't remember.

Scan do pretty good bare-bones systems and bundle deals, worth a look.
