Don't worry Flashy, it was first on after the 60's, you won't have seen it.

I've never seen one before, no one has, but I'm guessing it's a white hole.

Red Dwarf X was actually quite good. Very much back to first & second series style, just funny stories based around the crew on the ship. I also got to be in the audience for one of them and was a fun experience 😀 . Yes, they're all studio audiences.

XI trailer so far looks good too with a step up in the effects (hopefully not at the loss of plot)

I rewatched X recently, could hardly remember any of it. Much better than I remember though.

I didn't care for the last lot. I got the impression they tried to make it visually more glossy. I didn't think the stories stacked up either.

Bring back Pete Tranter's sister.

Why can't we listen to the classics; Mozart, Mendelssohn, or Motorhead?

As a long time fan, the last series just didn't do it for me.

I think the thing that made the older series so good was that behind the gags, each of the episodes usually actually had quite a decent sci-fi story driving it along.

The last series was just the same old gags with no real story. Look at Lister! He's such a slob! And Rimmer, what an anal jerk! The cat's really vain and stupid isn't he! Oh, and what about Lister - look how much a slob he is! and so on.

Actually that's one of the other things. Since about the time Kochanski came on the scene in an earlier series, they made the cat really stupid. He was never stupid before that. Vain yes, but not necessarily stupid.

I don't know as it was Kochanski v2 that "ruined it" per sé (though she was... poor) but that whole era was a low point in the series.

Incidentally, apparently the first episode is being shown early (tomorrow?) on one of Sky's pay-per-view channels, if you feel like waiting two weeks between the first and second episodes.

Just googled it, result! It's on tomorrow on UKTV Play, which is on Sky - but not part of Sky's network (it's part of whatever network owns Dave) and not really PPV. Possibly also available on Freeview, or catchup, etc?

That's the bunny, yes. What do you need to get that, then? (I could've sworn it said it was PPV, but I read it on that most reliable source of facts, Facebook.)

On the patented Verses-scale;

Season's 1 and 2 = Near perfect
Season's 3 and 4 = Pretty good
Season's 5 to 9 = Meh
Season 10 = Not bad, maybe close to 3 & 4's level...

I think you've got 5 in the wrong row there. Quarantine, Back to Reality...?!

It was 7 where the wheels came off IME (and - coincidentally - when Rob Grant left the show). Chloe Annett's Kochanski was a terrible misstep, and Chriss Barrie was off doing other things for half of it.

Whoops, you're right I'd forgotten the improvement before the fall...

Season's 1 and 2 = Near perfect
Season's 3 and 4 = Pretty good
Season 5 = Very good
Season 6 = OK
Season's 7 to 9 = Meh
Season 10 = Not bad, maybe close to 3 & 4's level...

Love the first 2 books too, they fleshed out the background well.

+1 for falling off the perch when Grant & Naylor parted ways.

Some of the earlier episodes were genius, obviously inspired by Dark Star but they made the most out of being limited by budget, limited character interaction sans Dwarf and the constraint of avoiding being anything at all like Star Trek - parody excepted. Series X was a return to form, I really enjoyed it but they sored missed Holly.

A chap I know got tickets to be in the audience last year so at least some of the laugh track is live. Don't know if it all is though.

Grant Naylor is a gestalt entity and no I'm not thinking of Rob Grant I'm thinking of Grant Naylor as that's who wrote the earlier seasons. Think of the episode Legion 😉

I watched it last night.

It wasn't that good.

It was chock full of cliches that were referenced as cliches until it all got a bit meta.

It used to be smart and original. It really isn't now.

It wasn't great but I'm not writing the new series off yet! The first couple of series will always be my favourite as the limited budget forced the writers to be inventive & focus on the interaction between the crew, rather than extensive sets or supporting casts. It's a shame this ethos got lost somewhere (although episodes like Gunmen proved that on-location episodes could work!)

I also hate the CGI, the model shots & slightly shoddy practical effects used to be brilliant & fit the character of the show perfectly! I think if they went back to these and knocked a zero off the budget they'd go a long way to recapturing the old charm. (I seem to recall they did a kind of "special edition" of some of the original episodes which was just awful. Low budget sci-fi needs wobbly sets, etc, like original Star Trek/Dr Who, etc)

Generally no. Same as with series X, a lot claimed it was laugh track. As someone in the audience for first episode of X I can assure it definitely wasn't and XI & XII are studio audiences also (X was shot at Shepperton and XI/XII at Pinewood, all with audience).

However they do take the audience reactions and tweak it. Also some scenes are shot on location or separate to the audience stuff. Usually they play that back to an audience. I recall the one I saw, there were separate scenes which had audience reaction from the following week. We also had some previous filmed inserts. Kind of weird to react to. You get a warm up act to build it up though.

Anyway, watching the first episode, seems a bit like series 4 to 6 style. Personally I prefer 1 to 3, and series X was a bit more like that. Still, not too bad but not amazing.

Kryten is getting a bit chubby though 😉

Watched one and distinctly meh.
The early ones were superb for the mix of scifi and heavily packed in jokes. Quite a fan of Queeg if anyone remembers that one and unrelated lines below..

"I'm Holly the ship's computer with an IQ of 6000, the same IQ as 6000 PE teachers"

"Hook, line, sinker, rod and copy of Angling Times"

Big fan here - looking forward to watching the first episode.

Agree with Verses revised idea of which seasons were best and yes, you can tell when the writing partnership stopped. Was only talking about that on way back from cycling on Sunday.

same IQ as 6000 PE teachers.

Genius!
