What's the going rate for a reconditioned record no 6 vice? What sort of things should I be looking out for with one?

Why do you want a reconditioned one.

9/10 that just means someone's wire brushed it and thickly painted some hammerite over it.

Looks gash

Hides what kind of life it's lived.

Look for a genuine one that hasn't been abused and hidden under paint.

Just do an ebay search for completed sales to see what prices they have sold for. Given their weight, the cost of postage will be high, so best to have a watch list going for a realistic circumference so you can collect.

You will pay more for a reconditioned one as someone will expect paying for the work that has gone into it. You can buy replacement jaws if they are knackered and ened replacing.

A well used old one that looks grubby is best. Make sure it's an original though and not a newer Chinese made vice as they are far inferior.

If the handle's bent or the rear of the moving jaw has been used as an anvil, you know it's been abused. Those are the most immediate things that'll make me pass one by.

Record seem to get all the attention on ebay. I ended up with a couple of old Woden ones. They got bought by Record, long before Record got bought by Irwin.

I gave £100 for mine about 15 years ago. Definitely the best investment ever made for the workshop. If it is a proper original and hasn't had a hard life and has been tidied up then expect to pay upwards of the £100 mark I guess. Plus a lot of postage. Get a good one and it will outlast you.

EDIT> Sorry, mine was a Record 36. Current price new is about £900

When I bought my Record No 4 six years ago, it looked pretty tatty, four or five different layers of paint that were cracked and chipped, with surface rust, but it was untouched.
I just put a wire brush on my angle-grinder I picked up cheap and gave the vice a thorough going over, then painted it with flat blue Hammerite, a decent match for the original colour.
Looks terrific.
IIRC, I got it for £50, collected it from Bridgwater.
