I want to take a snapshot of a hard drive (XP currently but may need to be used on Windows 7) so I can quickly return it to exactly the same state it was in when the snapshot was taken.
I've not done this in years and I guess/hope the software has got better.
What have you used that really worked well?

If you don't mind paying for software, the best product currently (IMHO) is Acronis.
If you're looking for a free solution, then a Linux live CD is probably your best bet.
