Not too spendy, maybe 70 quid. Something waterproof would be nice, mid height. General walking duties, dog walking/hills/fields/ bit of rock scrambling/beach etc etc
Off to Wales next week so something before Friday in the post would be great.

I would head in to Go Outdoors and see what they have. You should get some reasonable boots for that money but it will depend what they have in stock.

Cotswold have massive range online; they have some around £70 in sale - original prices were upto £150.
Store stock much more limited.

Sports Direct choice of Karrimor waterproof boots, sub £50.

Something that fits, from a shop that knows what it's talking about. Different shaped feet need different boots. £70 on a pair that hurt after 5 miles is just a waste.

... is the right answer.

Last time I bought a pair they were Berghaus Explorer, and they've been truly brilliant. The only slight downside is completely coincidentally they're the same boot my OH has (only slightly newer), so we look like one of those tosspot couples who buy matching clothing.

Boot fitting in 'outdoor' is like wheel building in bikes, the best places are still the indy shops.
The problem you'll have though is that you're unlikely to find a good outdoor shop that does proper boot fitting and sell boots for £70.

Decathlon and GO would be my recommendations based on your price point. Wear good outdoor socks (Bridgedale, etc) when trying on the footwear and what you are looking for should be a close enough fit that your foot cant move in the shoe but not that tight that it pinches anywhere.

Do the test here: http://www.runnersworld.com/running-shoes/the-wet-test and get insoles (amazon sell Pro 2 insoles that are good and really cheap) that match your foot type.

What do you mean look like? You are one of those couples 😉

I've stopped using walking boots and just use approach trainers / shoes - lighter, more comfy and just as good unless you're deliberately going bog hopping.

I've got some Lowas I got off Fleabay, brand new but half price @ £70. Was a bit dubious whether they'd fit & feel right but theyr'e as comfy as comfy things. My Mrs tried some Lowas on in Ellis Brigham & got those, she wears them ALL the time (almost)

I'd probably look at Altbergs cos theyv'e got a factory in North Yorkshire & I'm a patriotic old sod, but I don't know what prices they come in at.

Good advice from jim the saint.

Cougar - I think I've seen you and your missus walking round Ambleside on a Sunday morning.

Is this you?

I've been through loads of boots through the years from all the best brands. The best boots by far have been my Palladium Pampa Hi waterproof. I picked them up for £50 3 years ago, they are really light still waterproof enough to walk in the sea and look near new. If they are good enough for the French foreign legion then they are good enough for me.

I bought some Grisport Fuse boots from here:

http://www.newforestfootwear.com/

They are properly waterproof, comfortable and reasonably priced. The grip is not fantastic but overall I've been pretty pleased with them. Had some sh^tty Hi-tec ones before and was very pleased to be able to put them in the bin once these arrived!
I think they do free returns too which is handy.
