Looking for an affordable webhost capable of installing a CMS like Joomla or Drupal to build a business website which in it's infancy will see low bandwidth. Scalability later on prefered. This little business could well never see the light of day so would like to pre pay for a year, for not much money

What do you class as not much money? We host a club site on hostpapa for £68 a year, with unlimited bandwidth, 30 databases, no emails but email forwarding.

You can get some hosting to do that for as little as £1 per month. Loads of options out there.

123-reg I would recommend for buying domains. They have a nice usable control panel and don't have any hidden charges to carry out simple tasks like some of their competitors do. However, trying to get in touch with them is something else, so I'm not sure I would recommend them for hosting.

The hosts I deal with are well out of price range though, so couldn't say which is better.

godaddy have a european data centre and work fine for us. You can push a button to get a Drupal setup and I think that Joomla is similar. It is quite cheap for shared hosting which I guess is what you are looking at. Most of the time it seems to work quite well but occasionally, once every couple of weeks, the page load time goes through the roof for a short time - don't know why. Has never really caused a problem though. Make sure you go for the European site if your business is Europe based.

edit: And don't try and go too cheap. Drupal can run v. slowly unless the host is up to it.
