MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Want to get some tunes piped into the kitchen when I'm cooking, but don't really have space for a proper hifi - just workshops and a bit of window shelf. Currently sticking my phone in a mug which is ok but could really do with some sort of speaker, BT or a 3.5mm lead would be fine.
Any recommendations? Needs to work with both iPhone and Android, so AirPlay-only is out. Not too expensive either, maybe £100 tops - it's probably going to get food / drink on it st some point...
JBL Flip is the usual STW recommendation.
It's worth searching back through the forum, "recommend a bluetooth speaker" is one of those topics that has been started once a fortnight for the last ten years.

I've got a KitSound Hive for exactly this. Can be used with Bluetooth or 3.5mm. I've got a Chromecast Audio connected and generally cast Spotify through it. Works well and good sound quality for the size.
Have a look at Anker products. Well under you budget and great quality.
Stephen Fry would be quite good - not sure he does after dinner stuff though, and it might be a bit small scale for him even if he does. Haven't seen your kitchen, though. 😆
Betty Boothroyd. Suspect she'd be excellent company.

+1 Got one for 15 quid. Well pleased.
It was one of those times you think "that was a good buy, I think I'll buy another" - and then you think "err - why?"
Or maybe that's just me 🙁
JBL FLIP 3 here. Swapped by JBL for a flip 2 no questions asked which has a loose charge port.
+1 on an Anker Bluetooth Speaker of some description.....
Anker ++
I got the Bose bluetooth one for Christmas - pretty pleased with it.
I have a Bose SoundLink speaker thing. its great and we use it alot, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the garden, or in the garage if im dicking about with bikes, comes on all holidays and camping trips! Has a rubbery coating so feels really durable too.

I got one a these Sony things.
Plays CDs an all. Loves it I do.
Get a bigger kitchen. Just upgraded my surround sound amp and put the old one with a couple of small mission speakers, sub and Bluetooth receiver in the diner. Nuttin like cooking up a curry or making pizza with some tunes on and a decent sound.

Excellent advice! I'll start knocking through when I get home 🙂
Google home. Not just a speaker and very useful in the kitchen, sound isnt half bad either.
I'm impressed with my Amazon Echo, TBH.
Not 'great' sound compared to a full set of separates, but for a 'one plug small footprint' device it's great for the kitchen.
However, taking on board the above advice, we ARE aiming to knock down walls and extend our kitchen.
Then I'll wall mount a pair of Q acoustic BT3s (already bought) and pair them with an echo DOT..
I'll get the builders to put a power plug 'up on teh wall near the bracket' and chase the speaker cable into a channel/ducting, so there's no trailing speaker cable.
It'll jsut look like 2 speakers floating in the air.
Then I'll listen to "you're welcome" from Moana over and over and over and over and over and over again. Because I'm a good Daddy to my 2 year old princess....
DrP
JBL flip 2 here. Open plan kitchen and dining room. Plenty load enough.
In white, to match my trendy white room
I bought my brother one of these for Xmas and every time I hear it I'm impressed. Such a small speaker but an incredible sound.
Bluetooth or 3.5mm cable. You can link up multiple speakers and get a sub woofer as well if you fancy. Oh and they have just improved the battery life
How does that mini rug compare to the bose mentioned above?
Is there something similar with a remote control?
Would like one we can use with our telly but don't want to be up and down to turn the sound up.

Can pick UE Boom 2's up for less than £100 pretty much everywhere. Impressive sound. Waterproof so you can wash it if you get it covered in food.
I bought a Roll and it's much better than it has any right to be for the money.
If you've got wifi in the kitchen then I'd eschew the bog standard bluetooth speakers and get one of the Sonos-alike speakers such as the Yamaha WX010 you get a much better more flexible speaker (Bluetooth, Airplay, DLNA, the MusicCast gubbins etc) but lose out on the portability.
Is there something similar with a remote control?
My Sony has a remote 🙂
I've not heard the bose for comparison but the person who recommended it to me has B&W speakers in the rest of his house so the sound quality must be up to standard! With regards to the volume Control, the minirig doesnt have its own volume Control. You just change the source volume using the TV remote
the Bose sound is impressive for a portable speaker. for proper premium immersive audio you need something else but to just to provide a bit of background noise while your cooking or whatever its great, and theres always enough juice to crank it up if your fave tune comes on... infinitely better than the phone in a mug anyway...
Another vote for Anker
+1 for the JBL Flip 3
Perfect for popping into the kitchen, garage wherever you have chores to do.
Massive shout for either the ue roll or boom. Both bloody brilliant. In fact we have 3, 2 rolls and a boom. All fully waterproof, dust and shockproof. Great bits of kit!

Have you tried running two rolls as a stereo pair? or with the Boom for extra volume? There's some neat looking stuff in the iOS app.
As someone else has pointed out, if it's to go in one place and stay there something mains powered probably makes more sense than a rechargeable speaker
Yes had the two rolls synced together and then in party mode where you can all chose the tracks, the main user (overlord dj, top dog, Pete tong etc) can then kick any joined member if they play shit tunes. Causes lovely family tension 😆
Mine is the boom and it's sound quality is bang on. Best played in a corner of a room to get maximum throw tho.
Sonos Play:1 here, but it's probably not value unless you intend on getting a few more some time for around the house. Sound is great though.
UE Boom2 and a Bose Soundlink Mini for me. I prefer the sound of the Bose but the ability to run multiple Booms in parallel is fun.
The Bose Soundlink Colour is reduced to £64.99 (plus £5 voucher) at Argos at the moment.
Is there something similar with a remote control?
Surely your phone is the remote, as is your smar****ch
I've been looking at these as a speaker to take away with me when working and for in the garden during bbqs and stuff.
I've ordered the Anker, had the Bose mini for a few days previously and while it sounded excellent there was a manufacturing fault that meant the battery didn't work so it was returned for a refund. Not worth the silly money they are.
All the reviews seem to say the Anker is nearly as good as the bose and you'll excuse it the little bit it's missing due to the extra £140 in your pocket.
