Hello

Trying to find a one man tent for bikepacking, and I can't seem to find one that suits. Requirements as follows:

- Reasonably lightweight.
- Suitable for all season use in Scotland (nothing on blizzard hit mountain tops though).
- I am 6'3 so needs to be long.
- I would really like a small covered space outside the tent door just big enough to sit in if (when) it rains.
- Budget is middle of the road.

Thanks

Hoolie?

Do you want a one-man tent, or do you want a two-man (one plus gear) tent?

Budget is middle of the road.

The B497 or the M6?

Scarp 1.

Check the length though.

Check out Trekkertent. I have a Stealth 1.5 and really like it. Light, packs small, roomy for 1, weatherproof and a decent porch. You'd need the separate poles from Bearbones if you're bikepacking rather than walking with poles.

If my opinion counts for anything I'd go for a 2 man tent. I had a 1 man Force 10 Helium which weighed 1.2kg and was just big enough for me. The 2 person version was an extra 200g and gave plenty more space inside for gear and to also be able to sit up without my face sticking to the inner of the tent. I used said one man tent on the divide and the 2 man version on the Tour Aotearoa and it made a big difference to being comfortable.

At 6'3" you might struggle to find a single tent that provides enough headroom to sit up in.

The Force 10 helium has been a good tent and I'd recommend it, but it is only 3 season and although it has a vestibule area you will struggle to sit in it without being partly inside the tent. The vestibule area is also really handy for storing your gear outside the tent, but undercover.

I've had a look at that myself, looks good, that at the msr hubba 2, very lightwieight, loads of space, head wise. But the waterproofing does seem to be sacrificed bit for weigh, how do these super lightwieght, very thin, spacious tents stand up to scottish rain? ok? tempted, but that's my main concern.

I like the look of the new MSR Hubba Tour series. The 1 would suit you

I'm 6'3 and haven't seen a normal tent that will comfortably fit me with a large mat and winter sleeping bag

Second hand Terra Nova Laser Comp? I've had no issues with space, and the porch is big enough to cook in.

220cm end to end, unsure about the size of the inner. I'm 6ft 0

Andy, if you can stretch to a Nordisk Telemark it'll last and work well. Think like a mountain marathon runner, not a cyclist 😉

Welcome to the fold.

The smaller the tent the greater the condensation issue. Take that into account.

I've gone off what I now call "coffin" tents 🙂

Greg, which Telemark? Looks to be only 220 long

I've not found any tent that is 220 long on paper to be sufficiently long in all circumstances e.g condensation or wind blowing. They're often (but not always) tapered at the ends so a comfy mat with a warm (and puffy) sleeping bag means you're going to be touching the ends, plus it's not fun trying to sit up with your head bowed.

2 person tents are usually a better bet, that laser comp 2 looks a better bet at 230cm long.

I like some of the stuff from Lightheart gear in the US, made for tall people. Expensive though, plus FX rate and import duty

So far the best two 'shelters' I've found for this are the MLD supermid and the Trailstar, but they're floorless so you need an inner if you want to turn it into a 'tent'. There are obviously more, that's just where I've stopped.

The Macpac Minaret is supposed to be OK. I've been after a Wild Country 2XL for a little while, but they've stopped making them annoyingly

In a recommend what you own way: Vaudé Taurus UL. 2.35 down the middle or 2.2 is you discount the point. Quite tall so not ideal in high winds but nice to sit in.

It's ace, I have one. The porch is set at a bit of a diagonal, so it can theoretically accommodate a longer person and a shorter one.

Bombproof but really heavy and bulky for a 1 man bikepacking tent.
