I am looking for a backpack that is accessible like a holdall when I put it down, I don't want to be rummaging through a top loader, something like this.

http://eu.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_NL/climbing-packs/stone-duffel-42-pack-BD681158_cfg.html#start=12

But a tad smaller and maybe with some pockets.

Anyone know of something like that?

You could keep a look out for one of these on ebay (not sure they are made anymore)

Alpkit Gourdon? They look a lot like the Timbuk2 Phoenix from memory...

Alpkit Gourdon is a top loader. Never came across a small backpack that opens like a holdall before but have seen ones that open up more like a suitcase.

Yeah, a suitcase type opening would also be considered.

I had a Decathlon rucksack with a zip all the way down the front. Never used it as I always used a waterproof liner in it.

Hmm, no, not seen anything like that.

A messenger type bag should give you the accessibility of all your kit as its a wide top loader.

I've just recently brought a http://www.over-board.co.uk/pro-vis-waterproof-backpack-20-litres.html for £50. My criteria is totally different to yours in that i wanted: waterproof, high vis, an internal pocket and an outer pocket. My pack floats & has a buckle whistle! 😀

North Face Base Camp, its a holdall with very good shoulder straps. The small size is perfect for flight luggage and then for the beach.
All in all a very good bag.

Alpkit do the Fixe Backpack which is also a crag bag. Looks very nice. But what a surprise, out of stock!
