I want to receive some money from someone abroad (in France), who doesn't have a paypal account.

They have asked me for an iban number to do some kind of bank transfer. Is that going to cost them a fortune to do? Is there some more sensible / low charges way?

It'll cost about £10-£20. There isn't really a better way, unfortunately.

And it'll be split 50-50 between you and them (I had this with my brother who lives in Ireland).

They could transfer it via Western Union (seriously, not a joke, they can be useful!), but I don't know how much they charge for the privilege.

Not entirely true. When making a cross-border SWIFT payment, the sender can specify if the charges are set to be paid by them, 50/50, or you entirely.

Are you receiving funds in GBP or EUR? Have you provided your IBAN and BIC/SWIFT? Sometimes banks are funny about giving them out, but if you know your sort code and account number you can work it out yourself.

It's from Europe, I don't know if it'll come in GBP or Euros, I've given them IBAN & BIC numbers.
