Hi.

My rear brakes on my Polo have stuck on this morning. Released the handbrake but the brakes stayed on.

They are drum brakes if that helps.

Quick fix anyone?

Thanks.

Stu

Ridiculous quick fix drive it with someone bouncing about in the boot or on tow ball if available to try free it...........if not then wheels off and fettle 🙂

Sharp tap on the drums with a hammer usually frees it (like enough to hammer in a really big nail!), but be wary, if they've stuck it could mean the shoes have delaminated from the backing plate and tapping them will just make it temporarily better, they'll just jam up again.

while i wouldn't say this is a VW thing, every VW i've owned has done this.

whack the wheels with a hammer/big bit of wood.

I forgot to mention you need to have the handbrake off first so put it in 1st and do it.

Take care to test your brakes a few times at <20mph to ensure they don't lock up on first proper use.

If they are jammed on going forwards, try to reverse as this may help them release also.
