MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Morning all.
As above really, at the beginning of December I had a sudden bout of conjunctivitis which turned in a swollen knee, then it hurt to pee, then my other knee and both feet and ankles blew up and it feels like I’m being stabbed in every joint below the hips.
I’m into my 3rd week of being almost completely immobile now, has anyone had this sort of thing before so I can get a vague idea of when I might be able to do anything again?
I was planning on starting cycling to work again in the new year, but that’s obviously on hold for a bit. But so is even going to work, because I’ve still got fuzzy eyes 3 weeks later.
Joy of joys the MiL is coming on Christmas Day expecting to be entertained, I might have to hide in the bedroom until she’s gone.
Has your doctor given any indication of this?
No, just that it is rare he said. Was hoping someone would have personal experience.
I had post-viral reactive arthritis. Just as I was recovering from Covid my Knee, wrist and Elbow all ballooned and became very painful. I was put on a 12 week steroid course by a rheumatologist who also told me I had long covid according to my notes (not sure why no one had told me).
To be honest I have never fully recovered and have aches and pains most days, but they are all manageable and I am back doing a physical job 1 day a week and can ride my bike etc.
I had Covid / Flu and developed a UTI along with everything else. Checked out symptoms of both and apparently this year's Covid digestive problems and UTIs as a special treat. Two weeks and I seem to be coming out the other side. Had to have antibiotics for the UTI. Never known discomfort like it, bladder felt like it would burst yet naught but a trickle.
My wife had this following an infection. Her rheumatologist told her the pain was “exquisite”, like nothing else you’ve ever felt. Two pregnancies confirmed this. Anti inflammatory pain relief in high doses it did go away, but I just remember the pain. Morphine was needed!
I’ve had parvovirus reactive arthritis which is associated with a specific HLA type. I could barely walk for a month but it went away. The irony was that I was working on rheumatology drugs at the time.
Following my first bout of covid just 3 months ago, left with reactive arthritis in my right knee, right hip and right side of my neck. (Yeah only my right side, weird).
Driving for more than 15 mins is achey and painful. Waking in the morning in pain and takes me a while to warm up.
GP ran some bloods, all of which came back negative for any autoimmune or inflammatory issues (but this doesn't negate the possible diagnosis of reactive arthritis). GPs advice. Take panadol/brufen when the pain is bad. And I could "refer myself" to a rheumatoidologist. End of story as far ask she's concerned.
Some days are better than others, but it's something I'm consciously aware of from the minute I wake up.
I've been taking turmeric, glucosamine dailyand applying deep heat on the bad days.
It's hard not for me to draw connection between covid and the emergence of this issue. It's well documented on the internet, it seems.
Sounds like Sjogren's syndrome. iIRC steroids might help - IANAD
Not so sure. Identified by it's two most common symptoms - dry mouth and eyes. I don't have those sx. And all my antinuclear bloods were negative.
It's bloody annoying though, and something I'd like to not have, whatever the diagnosis.
Just back from the docs, he was very keen for me to say I was feeling better despite me hobbling in on crutches. I’d been on steroids for 5 days and the helped for about 13-15 hours a day. He was considering putting me on a lower dose, I’ve had about 9 hours sleep in the last 3 days because of the pain I nearly cried.
I’ve got the same dose as before now and a follow up appointment in 14 days got to the pharmacy and he’s given me 9 days meds 😭
So frustrated I could actually cry/scream.
I’ve been generally lucky with my heath so have never known pain anything like this, it feels like I’m walking on 2 broken ankles.
I've had something comparable for quite some time - at least Reactive Arthritis is one of the possibilities (Non-specific and drug-induced arthritis are others). A decent resource as a starting point is this:

(If the link isn't published, search for "Arthritis UK - Reactive Arthritis" and you should find it).
The link gives a suggestion about how things might progress (hopefully all-but settle in a few months). My symptoms have been slower to settle (still faintly-there despite improving for a couple of years) and I have to accept that there may never be a precise diagnosis. There's no harm in speaking to a Rheumatologist if you want to take stock of things - I did.
Having said all that... two-and-a-half years ago I was scared of cycling - if I were to fall, I didn't know if I could get up from the ground (even if uninjured). Now my joints/ tendons seem pretty-much back to normal.
