Bunnies!

They make wonderful pets, though you have to know what you're getting into.

Because they are such an important part of my life [especially around moulting time]; and, also because Cinnamon Girl mentioned it and I like sharing the little beasts - I added a little media from over the years I have had these two, Ruby [brown] and Tak [white].

All rabbit discussion, especially around care and play, welcome. Pics too!

High fives gofasterstripes. 😀 They look so cute and obviously get on well together. What happens when you go out, do they have a run in the garden or a cage indoors?

Pepper looks like a sweetie! The fireplace pic was cute, I figure it was a warm day?

CG - they live in a two story hutch and spend most of the daytime hopping around downstairs and eating the plasterboard!

They're full-time indoor buns and get pretty confused outside. Especially Ruby, who is more flighty.

Jinx, also known as "that bastard rabbit". But not as often as he deserves because he is actually rather awesome. If he was better at making tea he would be perfect.

Gofasterstripes and Shackleton, your rabbits look great, pepper does the sentry duty as well on the couch. Love watching her run about and getting into mischief, she's great fun and helps me chill out after a tough day. There is some more photos of pepper on my Instagram page and on the future Mrs bazhalls site, search for bazhall71 and rachelsimprints.

There was a programme on radio 4 yesterday about pet rabbits, listening to it just now and it's quite interesting, it's about the number of rabbits up for re homing after people have bought as they think they are a good first pet.

Great tip on the programme, I shall iPlayer it. Yes, it is a huge problem. I worked for Pets at Home for a while, and the amount of people I put off or occasionally even had to refuse rabbits was very high. The public perception of rabbit ownership is very innacurate (stops typing to remove rabbit from subwoofer again)....

Mine don't like being off the ground. Neither will sit on the sofa, and its taken a while to find a way to pick them up that works well. Seems that if you have a hand across the chest with front paws on hand, and, the pelvis/upper rear legs in the other hand, you can hold them with their back or face against you, but there's no stress of having the feet against you which feels like they are standing but trapped. I might upload a picture when missstripes wakes up and gets off my leg!

Yeah, we've got lots of them. It's a wildlife camera. Picks up on movement.

I ended up with constant rabbit-fox-cat-dog sequences at the rabbit hole. With the occasional passing badger.

Our old pet rabbit was toilet trained until my wife got her hands on it, then it just pooped everywhere.

Spent its days either trying to hump me, chew me, eat the ps2 console or attack our cat.

Blooming fab posts about rabbits. They do look so happy.

You and Yours was the programme:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0735qjt

The teeth are, well, should not be an issue. A combination of training, respecting the animal's needs and friendship should mean you won't get bitten. Oh, and spay/neutering. THIS IS NECESSARY.

Accidents can happen, though. I have had to point that one out several times

"A rabbit might not be a good pet for your young child as they can bite if not handled correctly."
"What do you mean bite? I thought they were cute and fluffy"
"They have teeth than can slice hardwood and chop cables. They shouldn't bite you if you treat them correctly, but you should be aware it is a possibility"
"Yeah, but does it hurt?"
"Well, Ruby bit me once by accident when I was playing with her and her teeth met in the middle. After travelling through 2cm of skin"
"I'll take the guinea pig after all!"
"Great choice."

We've two that live outside in their movable run. They used to have the run of the garden in the old house but now need to be confined to their run. It's got two hutches (one at each end) separate by a 2.4m X 2.4m X 1.2m high cage. I intend creating a bolt on run that I can move to give them better access to fresh grass. Access to the bolt on will be via a bit of drainage pipe.
Both hutches are on 2 levels and there are things for them to do in the run to keep them occupied.

I'd love to let them be free but they'd get killed or escape here 🙁

current garden had foxes, wild rabbits, badgers, birds of pray etc

Great pets, just don't underestimate the noise and voracity if loose in your garden 🙂

An unflattering picture, but I've never seen Ruby cross her feet! We're all watching Poirot, except Tak who is trying to hide in the sub. Can you see a pattern here?

Used to be house rabbits but he's a bit of a sprayer even though he's been neutered and hormone tested to double check. They know live in six foot double tier hutch and have the run of a 8x6 shed in the day.

Awwww! They're beautiful!

Spraying is often a problem, though Tak has calmed down since he lost his, umm, motivators. He's probably still looking for them, hence the mischief.

Spaying should also be done on Female rabbits [point of general info], as they are prone to cancers of the reproductive system if not allowed to breed naturally. Also, they can be aggressive little sods if not done [hutch ownership and defense].

This is a costly and dangerous operation, count on having to stay by the animal for two days at least afterwards, perhaps hand-feed and maybe even force-feed if the stress/pain is putting them off eating.

We had a housetrained dwarf lop called Thumper when I was growing up. She was awesome, she loved sitting on people's shoulders and on the back of the sofa, playing with toilet roll like she was the Andrex puppy, and the theme tune to The Bill. She also hated Phil Collins.

She was also male, but we didn't find that out until she was seven years old.

We had pepper spayed when she was 6 months old mainly due to the possibility that she may get cancer and to chill her out a bit. We had to force feed her after 2 days and she wasn't a happy bunny with that but she picked up later on that day and started eating her own food, was a bit stressful.

I bought pepper one of these for hiding her treats in and she loves it, took her a day or two to work it out. Great fun watching her lift the blocks out with her mouth.

Good call dude.

Another easy tip is empty loo rolls tightly stuffed with hay and a treat in the middle, so they will have to deconstruct it to get to the contents.

Mrs dickyboy has Sebastian a giant continental, has free reign of downstairs and small garden with no hutch or cage in sight 🙂 but we do have a stairgate on the kitchen which is useful if he's getting overly frisky with your slippers 😮

Cute! The rescue place we got our guineas from, now sadly closed, was completely stuffed with rabbits. People get them from pets at home and soon get bored/realise they grow and dump them, it's a real shame. I can't imagine how many have horrible lives in uncleaned cages 🙁

My local paper has an article saying a rehoming charity is suspending adoptions this weekend of rabbits. I think this a good idea as it will stop people who are not aware of what it takes to look after a bunny from adopting them on impulse

Don't roaming indoor rabbits leave faeces all over the place, or are they toilet-trainable (unlike our four indoor guinea pigs)?

The can be toilet trained but sometimes they will leave droppings esp if they have been eating their droppings

Ours only craps outside of his litter trays when he dozes off on the back of the sofa and they fall behind. Otherwise nary a stray bum nugget to be found.
