The Mrs and I will be having a rare evening out together tonight, no kids, while she's staying with the in-laws near Liverpool. I'm going up by train after work tonight so we thought she'd meet me at Lime Street and we'd go for a beer and something to eat.

We've tried this before but the closest we've found to somewhere reasonably quiet with a nice cosy pub atmosphere is the Phil. Dinner after tends to be a curry, given the hour...

Any better suggestions?

Not been in a while, but it used to be quieter towards the Dale Street side of town for pubs (Doctor Duncan's through to Rigby's) after the evening work crowd start to dissipate (so after about 7) with the exception of the Ship&Mitre. Smaller places to eat (so quieter with cosy corners) include Clove Hitch near the Phil (bistro with 'worldwide' beer selection) or Delifonseca on Stanley Street (Mediterranean), but you would probably have to book. If you like curry, the Maharaja on London Road always seems to be quiet, but I haven't been in a very long time (southern Indian). In my experience, if you go to somewhere like Kimos (do decent but cheap mediterranean / kebab and salad but are dry) at around 8pm they'll be empty and thinking of closing for the night.

The front room at the Phil is often quiet when the main room's busy.
The Grapes on knight street is a nice pub,we also drink in the Dispensary on Renshaw street, good beer but can get busy.
Not sure about food..
