Might be useful if you named a few of her favourite authors or books. Are we talking Jilly Cooper or Iris Murdoch here? "Fiction" is quite a large category, and adding "lady" on the front doesn't really narrow it down that much...

Going out on a limb,

Poison Study is a belter. It's pitched as 'young adult' fiction but don't let that put you off, it just means it's not too heavy (plenty of adults read Harry Potter after all. It's a female protagonist which is why I'm suggesting it as chickfic(*). I thought it was an entertaining tale and well written, and the first of a trilogy if you're so inclined.

(* - (tm) me, which I just made up)

In that case, I'd like to +1 my own suggestion. (-:

she likes the traditional ones, maeve binchy etc. She tried the eats lies and cries or something recently, the one that julia roberts made into a film.

If she hasn't already read it then try One Day by David Nicholls - seems to roughly follow your description and is equally readable by men. Currently in most top 10 fiction charts too so you should be able to get it cheap!

Edit: P.S. If I got Mrs R a ped egg for her birthday I'd probably find it shoved up an orifice it doesn't really fit in. 😯

A ped egg for a present?!

Jesus mammory rogering christ, don't do it! (or if you do, make sure you buy her an iron and a hoover as well to complete the effect).

As for chick-lit suggestions, that confessions of a shopohilic by sophie kinsella seems to go down a treat usually...

One Day by DAvid Nicholls is good. If she likes Chick Lit however about something by Dorothy Koomson.
I just read Poison Tree by Erin Kelly which I thought was brilliant and I'm not normally into Chick Lit although it does have a slightly different ending.
Or Santa Montefiore "Meet me under the ombu tree" only love story I ever loved and I'm desperate to go to Argentina now!! 😉

LEt us know what you buy in the end.

The know, faces, the graft. They are very violent, dark etc. Perhaps Lesley Pearse? never look back, remember me and faith were my favourites and nice girly stories of hardship but a happy ending kinda thing.

Just thought about the Jodi Picoult novels, Salem Falls was my favourite but not quite proper chick lit more like chick lit thriller ... mm well not really. Don't know how to describe them.

MC I read my sisters keeper and didn't finish it in the end because it just didn't grab me, what's her other stuff like? Is it just more of the same? Someone lent me the pact but really haven't got the interest to give it a go

Get her a collage style photo frame with a load of pics from your fav holidays/life moments/kids in it.
Stuff that you "make" will be that more special :]

OO secret history was quite good.
@ Emma82 some of her stuff is utter rubbish! The ones I enjoyed were Sister Keeper (which I thought was brilliant, ending was unbelieveable!) Salem Falls was very different (although still written in the same style). I can't remember The Pact (although I have read it). What other stuff have you read? OO keep these suggestions coming I LOVE BOOKS! And hopefully I'll get a Kindle in April for my birthday so I can fill it up with more new suggestions from here .

Just thought of another one Audrey Niffeneger "The Time Travellers Wife" TBH first time I struggled and gave up at 100 pages but everyone kept telling me how good it was, 2nd time I LOVED IT! Her most recent books is good too, although COMPLETELY different.

What do you have in the hamper so far?
Some nice underwear? Some new silver earrings, bottle of something she drinks (small bottle of gin, tia maria or whatever). CUDDLY TOY it's like a Brucie game show now 😉 Have you got her a cake? If not a mini cake for comedy value. What else does she like/have interests/hobbies in? Voucher for something like theatre/weekend away? Depends on how much you want to spend?

God, mum gave me all the jilly coopers, whizzed through riders which I loved. Just started the next one. Have you ever read penny vincenzi? Have read a few of hers and they have all been excellent, especially the ones about the lytton family were great, three books following the family and their goings on over years and years. Really really good 🙂
