Morning All,

Not sure if this is uncommon or not but just looking for a bit of advice/sounding board.

We bought a 2007 plate Honda Civic last August from our local dealer. 20K on the clock.

Car was serviced prior to us taking ownership and the log book stamped for a 37.5k which although was well below from a mileage perspective it was in keeping with the annual service schedule.

Now we are needing to get the car serviced (its still under warranty) and Honda have said that because the 37.5K service was carried out last time we cannot use the 36k service option for a year 4 service. We are now having to go with a 50k service for a car that will have done 33k 😕

I am sure that this is correct but it sounds so wrong! 😆

Can anyone offer advice?

service should be done:

Every 12,500 miles / 12 months
Months Miles
12 12,500
24 25,000
36 37,500
48 50,000
60 62,000
72 75,000
84 87,500
96 100,000
108 112,500
120 125,000
132 137,500
144* 150,000

whatever comes 1st.

because different things are changed/checked at different service intervals.

Depends what needs doing?

Generaly (for an average car, most will be different)....
1yr/12,500 = oil + filters
2yr/25,000 = above + pollen/cabin filters + hydraulic fluids
3yr/37,500 = oil + filters + cambelt.
5yr/50,000 = as 2yr/25,000

Basicly if you bought a car, did nothing for 3 years, you'd still need the cambelt doing, if you bought it after 2 years of doing nothig, then it would need changeing at 12,500 miles.

Although you've got me thinking now, I just bought a car with 33,000 miles on it and the dealer gave it a 'full service', I never actualy asked him if he did the cambelt.........

You should try old cars, the midget needs its oil changing if you so much as look at it funny!

Just to hijack for a minute - our hire van has a 40,000km service interval - how tf do they manage that? What's different between the van and my car?

New(ish) car was a bit of a necessity 🙁 Up until last Autumn we didn't do new cars 😆

Too bloody true. Our 6 does demand such things to 😆

1) expensive fuly synth oil will outlast the usual 50/50 mineral/synth stuff you put in cars normaly
2) presumably thats a 12month interval, so they're assuming 25,000/12month = motorways
3) low tuned engine
4) its a van, so weight isn't an issue, so a big oil sump, big oil filter, and chunky engine parts that don't wear out?

Dunno about your car. My car is currently saying it needs its first service at about 35000 km, or in 2 years time.

Tinas, I use fully synth always... but yes I was thinking more oil, larger better filter.. some kind of cooler perhaps too?

One of mine requires 5 litres of fully synth 5-50 every 3750 miles, it's still cheaper to do that and my own servicing than some of the new car servicing costs I see bandied about despite 12 and 18k oil change limits!

The problem is that while fully synth will retain its viscosity stabilising capabilities longer than dino oil, it still picks up the same amount of guff while doing its job so unless the filter is huge and the oil volume fairly over-sized you're not doing the car any favours by choosing to extend a normal interval by using FS.

On my car apparently they don't even change the filters every year. Unless they are fibbing, having been caught out by somebody with too much time on their hands.

Are you sure? Usualy the first service is done fairly sharpish as they leave the factory with mineral oil, moderne engines are built so well you actualy need the 'cheeper' oil to allow the parts to wear away and fit together properly! And the first ones fairly soon as the engines always going to have some swarf/dust/other in it so the oild doesnt need to last long as it'll be changed out quickly.

One of mine requires fully synth 5-50 every 3750 miles

What is it, must be something sersiously exotic!

[edit] your other car is molgrips sister in law?

Is it that buyers of commercial vehicles tend to own then for 3-4 years and then dump them? Faults caused by a failure to service aren't going to show up during that timeframe and by the time they do, the original owners have sold them and they're out of warranty.

Yes, that's what is says on the dashboard computer. It's done 5k miles, says it wants a service in 16000 ish miles or 600 odd days.

Fair enough, still seems a very very long way to go on the original oil

Very few cars have the first service early now. Modern manufacturing techniques negate the need for it, and tighter emission limits mean the engines have to come new with high spec oil to prevent issues.

As for vans doing high mileage between services, it's all to do with sump size. A typical car will take 3-5litres of oil, while vans with 40k service intervals will take upwards of 8litres.

Cambelt is done at 80k miles on mine, that will be at 8 years old.

Ah yes, that makes a lot of sense 🙂 Bit of a false economy then, except in terms of vehicle down-time. A commercial driver could cover 10k miles in a couple of months I suppose which would lead to annoyingly regular garage trips for oil changes.
