Thinking of getting whiskey as a christening present, bare with me... I'd like it to be something my friend can keep for his lad so in 18 years or so time, they can open and enjoy together
What's a good one to choose? Not thought of budget, but guess a couple of hundredish would be about right???
with or without the 'e'?
Any ideas what sort of thing your friend likes already?
If whisky then scapa is pretty good. Not sure of whiskey though.
Sodding phone (and dyslexia!). Anyhow, that's poor spelling dealt with
Scapa 12 yo, Scapa distillery was mothballed for a few years then reopened under new ownership. The 12 yo was from the former owners and will now set you back around £100, in 18 years your pal can drink it or sell it as the price will rise.
My "special bottle" is a 16 yo first fill Aberlour, expertly bottled and labelled at the distillery by me, so if you're in the vicinity of Aberlour, that's something to check out
I'm all for getting naked with some booze, not sure I'd make it a family event though
The best single malt I have ever had was a Springbank 28 year old at a friend's house.
Edit: oops, just looked that up! I had no idea it was that expensive. A generous host indeed.
There are others from Springbank in your price bracket
16yo Scapa can be had for £60
16 yo Scapa is produced under the new owners (Pernod Ricard IIRC) The 12 yo was prior to the mothballing/change of owner, making it a collector's item in finite supply, so will appreciate in value
The 12 year old scarpa is just the sort of thing, might be the fella. Before I hit the buy button, anything else I should consider?
bare with me.
I'll keep my clothes on, if that's OK with you. Thanks for the offer, though.
My current fave would be Yamazaki 10. 'tis lovely.
Still prefer a good rum, though.
I have been blown away by Tamdhu recently. The normal 10 year old is only £34 in Booths but they have limited edition bottles at £100. Seriously good value, the range of flavours in one sip is extraordinary.

thing is, if it's a collectors edition now, will you want to drink it in 18 years time (bearing in mind I hated whisky at 18) or flog it and get several decent drinkable bottles.
FWIW I'm in process of flogging my collectors bottles (not a vast number TBH) as I'd really rather drink something 'nice'. Easy drinking but lovely - decent aged Glenfarclas - Clynelish - Oban - not that sure about Scapa TBH though it's maybe improved - used to be pretty rough. Macallan?

Islay malts are a wee bit of an acquired taste but once you do acquire it.......
Devil's advocate, but is there any point buying something in bottle now and keeping it for 18 years? It's the maturing in the barrel that's important; I was under the [possibly mistaken] impression that once it was bottled that was more or less it in terms of flavour development. Might be better off buying a share in a barrel if that aspect is important?
Lots of good whisky in this thread.
However, how many of us liked any whisky at 18?
